What about a HAGON shock? - are they anygood and would that be as good or better than an R6 one? - Just there's a low mileage 2nd hand one on ebay for almost £150 - which is half the cost of a new one - but a bit more than I was hoping to pay.
- so much choice now - not sure which way to go! need a cheap but good option really so may go with the R6 conversion or a YZF750 Ohlins if I can get one.

hagon make budget shocks which are ok, personally I'd go with R6 or YZF though

yep i'd second that,

if you can find a yzf go for it, but their rare as rocking horse do do
tbh the best option is the r6 shock for performance and cost
on the road your not really going to beat it and there's quite a few 400/600 hybrids out there using the r6 without any problems, so it'll take all a 400 can through at it

there's also a lot of R6s that have em 2 ;)

Ahhhh - the deed is done!! Got my adapter from Kayla (Thank you ! ;) ) - it arrived really quick. Had to wait over a chuffin' week for my R6 2CO shock to arrive tho!! The impatience was killing me! Anyway - Then scratched my head for a while wondering how I'm going to take all the weight off the back end as I'd only got paddock stands. Then I remembered Evil (I think) saying get a mate to hold it on the side stand - so I got my son to pull it over for me. Took about half an hour - and the worst part was trying to drop the R6 shock in from the top as mine was tight on space due to a carbon hugger. With a bit of lifting up and down the shocker went in and then I attached Kayla's adapter. It has definately firmed up the rear end - so much the front feels sloopy now!!

At the moment I've pretty much centered all settings as a starting point (although I have the spring set on 2) - has anyone got any recommended settings for the R6 Shock on the 400?

Cool! I'm glad you're happy with the part.

I've got mine on standard settings and it's been fine so far. I know what you mean about the sloppy suspension, but the rear end is now on new-ish parts and I'd bet that the forks are well overdue fresh oil so it'd be worth spending a few hours or so changing the oil.

i got a set of standard fork springs (within tolerance) and spacers if you wanna make me an offer
i wouldn't recommend it though as there designed for 8 1/2 st oriental chaps and there 20 yrs old now.

depends on what you want to spend but if you don't fancy a full front end conversion from a more modern bike you could try and find some sp forks which are pretty rare now or go for fork internals from a decent suspension manufacturer, you can start with springs and spacers for about £120 and go right up to fully adjustable conversion kit for stupid money.

depends what you weigh, some peeps can get away with a good fork overhaul and 20wt oil, but i'd go with springs and spacers to suit your weight

Eeerrm . . . Not much to say really as it was on the bike when I bought it several years ago now. I'll try and get some close up pics of the hugger - it might be recognizable to someone from a different bike? - it does seem to fit very well tho and not much space between it and the tyre (4mm) . . . a 'snugger hugger'!! I gather a Hugger for a 4DX/3TJ is quite rare - at least it might keep some rain off my lovely jubbly R6 shocker. ;)

I'm tempted to try heavier fork oil 1st and see what that does - new progressive springs are tempting but seem quite expensive (although I'd only have to buy them once). If I had a more mechanical brain I'd love to put some USD forks on mine just to give it a more modern race rep look, - but having said that I think there's something really appealing and gorgeous about the look of the 4DX/3TJ.
My sons both think I'm mad (maybe I am?!!) coz I'd sooner ride my old 400 than my R1.

Thanks to all of you for your advice and help - tiz a great forum. (Was on here for hours last night reading back on various old FZR topics!)

The reason I used Thunderace forks on my bike, other than I had a set kicking around, was they still look sort of standard-ish cos they're rwu. I would love a pair of late R6 wheels for my bike though (the five spoke ones).
