clutch cover gasket..

advice pleas?

I need to replace the gasket yet again because of an oil leak.

it will be the tird time ive fitted a new one. all sufaces cleaned off and free from oil ect, lots of red seal and tighted the bolts as tight as i dare and still it leaks, i have since got myself a torqe wrench so i will be able to set the bolts prpperly, but..

last time i replaced the gasket the bolts felt as if they were going to rip the thread out of the motor, and as it old and made of ally i figurted best not risk it, but now as it leaks still, did i not tighten them enough, i dont wanna do it all again just to find it leaking in a few days, or infact ruin the threads, what could i do to fix it once and for all, ive got some, 'quicksteel' i could put in the wholes and re tap them all out with new threads and put in fresh bolts but i dont really like that idea, what about drilling and tapping the wholes to the next size up and fitting bigger bolts?.. is thewre the room for bigger bolts? fresh thread and bolts that way, or do i just sillicone the fecker put the new gasket in and hope for the best?

it has been droped onto that caseing in the past, (havent they all?) is this likely to miss-shaoen the caseing al all meaning it wont fit quite right?

im at a bit of a loss and i dont wanna start drilling things unless i have to! lol

if its been dropped and youuve replaced several gaskets, then id go for a new cover dude. new gasket and if you worryed ad a small run of instant gasket along the faces, before sealing,

as for torquing them there m6 thread, i tighten by hand and then nip them up with a 3/8 rachet,

dont torque them thats over kill and the extra leverage could rip the threads out.

when removeing the older gaskets, did you use a chisel or blade etc? can work for and against you!
did it cut into the metal leaving a dip.
also did you make sure all the gaskets were removed?

Fun fact: when I recently redid my clutch, I discovered the previous owner didn't even bother with a gasket. I have my suspicions that he also didn't bother with one on the rear head either as it seems to be leaking...

i would like to try a new cover but, it will be a second hand one, and i dont think i have ever seen one without the same crash test marks on! and im haveing trouble finding one for sale anyway tbh,

on doing previous gaskets, ive removed all old gasket with a stanly blade makeing sure not to remove metal! lol took me hours, cleaned with petrol and made sure its been clean, ive put red seal around the joint and hand tightend/ratchet as you mentiond above,

any ideas? :D

Check that the bolts aren't bent. Hard to tell visually sometimes, if in doubt replace them.

This was the cause of my engine cover leak.

cheers for that, i'll give it a try, maybe this has something to do with why the treads feel naff!
