Our bikes won't be on the roads much longer!

Post by Addsclayton » Thu May 19, 2011 9:50 am

My NC23 has stopped starting and running reliably and now wont start at all. I have traced the problem back to the HT leads, easy fix right? Wrong I have called every parts supplier I have heard of and they have all said the same thing "sorry that part has been discontinued".

How do you keep your bike on the road when such basic service items are no Longer available? HT leads don't last that long so how reliable will a secondhand set be?

HT leads are available to be made from scratch...

all they are is a cable and a cap....

Stop being so negative!!

Buy some caps, some cable and make some ;) They'll last another 20 years

The caps if the same as the 29 are still available from Honda, the HT lead...it's just HT lead any 1/2 decent motor factors will sell it.

Now cheer the fuck up ;)

Ok fair play HT leads can be made fairly easily, what about coils and alternators and the big stuff. These bikes only 20 years old and already they have stopped making the simple stuff

Coils - they can be found easily new or secondhand. If you suddenly find they really are NLA, you can upgrade to a more modern coil-on-cap solution.
Alternators - these can also be reconditioned. Even if you can only get a bad one secondhand, that can be reconditioned.

Truly and honestly, what is actually NLA for the little 400's these days? Either as a new part, secondhand, refurb, or 3rd party spares? Not a lot, I reckon. The bikes may get less and less original if you insist on actually using them rather than putting them in a glass box, but you'll be able to keep them on the road for years to come, no worries.

I know that for the CB-1 you will have a hard time getting the tank or tail and the badge on the crankcase is now truly NLA. But I also know tanks can be filled and rust-treated. Tail plastics... trickier, but mostly repairable. Crankcase badge, one owner is looking into having a batch made of aluminium. There's always a way. If you're not determined enough, go buy a CB500 or Bandit

There's a bike in BSH this month that was built around a 90 year old engine running to an 85 year old gearbox with carbs designed in 1901. If that can be kept running then a 20 year old bike isn't going to be a problem for a long long time
