I wouldn't recommend cleaning the seal grooves with a steel scraper. A brass brush is better, it won't remove "good" material. Remove too much good material from the fluid seal's groove and you'll end up with a leak which either will leak fluid out, or air in, or both.

But of course amorti.
The caliper are ally and therefore softer than steel so susceptible to damage but you need to be going crazy to significantly score the groove.
The brass brush is good but it doesn't get out 22 years of shite and crud!
