they do split with age and also perish and collapse. worth eliminating it from your enquiries
EDIT: Rick contacted and vacuum hose ordered. He gave me the hard sell on Nitron shocks for good measure.

Right, one brand new Rick-O hose fitted! Had to open a beer as soon as I saw what a bugger it would be.
Didn't need to take the carbs off but crushed my hand a bit squeezing it through the frame.
Next ride will be with (hopefully) smoother fueling and brand-new Battlax 92s!
