Instrument/Speedo assembly problem NC35
Hi all,
I'm having trouble with my speedo. It's only counting Km's at about half speed ( If I travel 2km's it only adds 1km to the trip meter)
And the speedo is WAY out lol. I noticed this because I got pulled over by police awhile back thinking I was doing 60km an hour and they said they clocked me at around 100km/h. They let me off... Phwew..
Now I read on here that a common problem is the plastic cog on at the engine end of the speedo cable, and I checked this and it's fine. I'm thinking the speedo's busted.
I found a guy in my local area selling a instrument assembly for $300AU and it looks to be in good nick.
I also found this on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 1982wt_902
So I was just wondering from people on here, do you think its my speedo etc and if so should I buy a brand new copy of the instrument panel or play it safe and buy a second hand original?
Thanks for any feedback!

i'd check the cable itself and where it mounts underneath the speedo.
i'd be suprised if it wasn't the cable or the two places it connects to the bike - the white plastic piece and the speedo itself.
Can you turn the cable ok at one end and see it spinning at the other at the same rate?

Good man.
One more thought - the speedo drive itself can go on these (or certainly get stiff) - be worth taking the speedo drive off (the thing with the white nut on it) - just two bolts hold it on IIRC.
Then spin it like the gearbox would and check that the "screwdriver bit" that spins the white nut spins freely - if it's not smooth then this is your problem and would explain the fact that you are getting a speed reading but a reduced one.

Alright. Just pulled the speedo cable off and turned it like you said. As far as I could tell it was turning at the same speed at both ends. I plugged it back into the speedo and turned it by hand and I could hear a grinding sound from inside the speedo dial. I coouldnt normally hear this because the engine was running. I'm guessing the speedo doesnt normally make alot of noise. Sounded pretty dodgy.
So I'm guessing its the speedo.
So now I'm looking at either the eBay clone dash or the $300 second hand one..
Thoughts?
Anyone seen one of these ebay copies firsthand?

not sure if the speedo normally makes that sound or not - there are a lot of plastic gears in there though.
i'd check the speedo drive as i posted above to rule that out ^^^^ first, if it's not that sounds like replacement speedo time...
cheers,
dave

Grinding noise in the speedo may well be the problem as it's supposed to be nice and smooth & quiet!
Do check the white plastic bit which goes over the front sprocket bolt head though, (it resides inside the sprocket cover) and if that's ok and the inside of your speedo is Kaput, let me know as I've a spare speedo complete with its gear box which you can have; no need to buy the entire unit!

I think I have a spare speedo internal also. If I do, you can have it for the price of postage.

I'm in Adelaide. When you say internal, that means I just need to open up the housing and change out the parts inside the speedo? I got a haynes manual so should be able to do it.
How do you want me to pay for postage? Do you want to do COD or I can send you the postage price. PM me the amount you need and a bank acc# etc.
I'll just wait to hear back from speedy about the km/mh of his speedo. It might be a good choice as he said it had the gear drive on it aswell.
Either way, thanks alot!
