Smoke coming from under the seat?
hey guys,
Vfr 400 NC30, G reg.
Basically, i got the bike last week and rode it a few times, had it sitting in the garden on Monday the 28th march, it was just running on idle and smoke started coming from under the deat, more towards the side with the coolant tank. i turned the engine off, took the seat fairing off and started it up again to investigate further but it didnt produce smoke so i thought it might have been a leaf or something that had found its way on the engine or exhaust downpipe somewhere. Started it up today, 30th march and it did the same so i left it running this time and took the seat fairing off, and still couldnt find where the smoke was coming from..
any ideas?
cheers.

okay thanks for that, il check when it isnt raining. Im pretty new to the big bike world, what do you mean when you say reg/rec? and would the wiring plug be near the coolant?

Re: Smoke coming from under the seat?
First step - Stop running it! The more you run it, the worse you melt whatever is melting.
Second step - Unplug all the connectors you can find, one at a time, and investigate. It will be obvious which one has melted especially if it has been bad enough to have smoke coming off it.
Third step - post a picture on this board, we will tell you what it is and where to get a replacement.

The 'regulator/rectifier' is on the other side, but worth a look. (controls voltage levels for battery charging etc)NC30Dubz wrote:okay thanks for that, il check when it isnt raining. Not sure what else it could be? Petrol leak? Been spraying WD40 on it?

What does the smoke smell like? Colour of the smoke?
Where do you keep your bike? Could just be water/condensation.

Re: Smoke coming from under the seat?
Oh, and the smoke is cloudy/clear, not black or blue. It just seems like something is burning and smells the same, definitely not petrol. Today is the first time its rained since ive had it .its kept down the end of the garden under a waterproof cover, could well be condensation, only one way to find out
Thanks

Track down the hose that runs across the RHD top/side of the engine to the coolant bottle.
When I picked up my bike a few months ago, that was the cause of plenty of smoke!
