Engine Problems on my new project
Hi all,
I was a member on here about 2 years ago with an telefonia movistar nc30 until i lost the privilege after being a silly boy (which i greatly regret). Anywho ive just bought masta_J's nc30 and thought id re-register to see if i can get some valuable info from you guys. Now to the point the engine is a little poorly! When it was taken into town a while ago it got very warm and dumped some coolant but didnt loose any when it was ridden home or when i rode it to mine? A mechanic has told me it may be headgasket? Its burning a lot of oil and when i removed the carbs there oil around the intakes to the rear cylinders? Does anyone know where i should start or does it sound mega serious? any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

Re: Engine Problems on my new project
Oil gettin burnt is usually thru valve stems or piston rings, bike should be smoking quite heavily if its burning a lot of oil, tho if the head is warped from your cooling problem there could be other factors(check compression to establish). Your cooling system is obviously not working properly unless youd been very riding hard on a very hot day, it shudnt dump coolant, check radiator fins and fluid flow thru both radiators.. If your radiators arent heating up the thermostat may be faulty and not opening to allow coolant flow thru radiators, otherwise the water pump isnt working. Open the pressure cap on top radiator after 5mins and check for coolant flow into it. Cooling fan might be faulty as well causing overheating while idling in traffic, check thermoswitch on lower radiator. Normal operating temp is around 90 - 110.

Where was the coolant coming from? There may just be too much in the reservoir and it's overflowing. Burning oil doesn't sound good. But oil in the airbox may just be a sign that the oil level is too high.

thanks for your replys
superlite im not sure where the coolant came from as i didnt have the bike then, i can only assume it came out the overflow. spoke to a mechanic today who said it sounds like piston rings or headgasket but wont know without taking it apart. has anyone had a head re-bored? any ideas of price? this is my worst case scenario and am hoping it doesnt come to that!
