Are you sure the tapping is the engine?

My advice is, ring him tomorrow and ask for the bill to be sent to you. dont mention anything about problems with your bike.

Meanwhile get the fairings off the bike. drop the oil out of the sump and put some new oil in, leaving the filter in place.

Have a good look in the oil for metal shards.

start the bike and with a screwdriver or long piece of metal place it on each exhaust, if the tapping stops its exhaust, if not try and pinpoint what side and whereabouts it is, get a video of it and put it up here,
it could be a bloody socket rattling around somewhere!!

Or ask a forum member near who knows their nc's to take a look for you for some beer tokens.
its not the end of the world mate, second hand engine service it and put it in.

then when the bill comes check each part of the work.

at the very least you should get the cost of the dyno back as its basically useless!!

The cost does seem too high though. Especially if you didn't agree to have the work done.

If your low oil light works and hadn't come on you should be ok, just make sure to keep oil into it.

The tapping could be a lot of things. Perhaps a loose valve clearance? As the oil thins out you hear it more?

Especially since you've checked all of the obvious, without getting there and having a look its hard to tell.

My name is Thomas from Revolution Motorcycles, and I would like the opportunity to respond to Matt s post.

First of all we are a helpful service established in 1995, backstreet,yes! oily,Yes but helpful.
Unfortunately has not rung as at any point to discuss the running ,wheel or any other issues.
Secondly we have a policy of transparency, the customer can wait and watch where applicable, inspect replaced parts etc.
Secondly I only shaft girls.
Thirdly, we all make mistakes and if we did we will make good, thats a promise. Now back to the bike.
Ref the wheels; the powder coating was found to be fouling the mating surfaces where the front brake discs sit, during the wheel balacing process the discs had large visible runout due to the powder coaters not having masked the wheels correctly, so we cleaned those surface front and rear, this is a safety repair not charged for.
We did not change oil or filter, this should be regularly checked by the rider. halfway up the dipstick on our inspection.
Bike arrived with plugs loose and one of the main jets in the float bowl.
I have the same colour vfr here, if it is tyre machine damage and not ally oxidisation causing the flaking paint, we will happily swap.
The carburettors were 36 cms out of balance and as you know on a v4, this means carbs back out more than once to balance first by eye.
So, we have a bike thats been mucked about with. As you know, this makes the job far more labour intensive and can send you barking up the wrong tree.
If a bike is dropped and continues to run, it only takes a few seconds of no oil pickup to starve the engine and we all know what that means.
2 nippon denso plugs in the front,NGK's in the back.
The dyno was only used to induce load for lamda sensing not a power run to confirm fuelling across the range customer not charged.
Road test 50 miles
2 weeks?, yes the bike had been badly fixed previously , had multiple issues and a request for tyres was submitted mid repair.
Lots of of hours not charged for, but we like to be satisfied with the improvements.
A copy of the invoice available for all to see with customers permission.

It is great that an open forum can give both sides too.. It makes a refreshing change, there are plenty of peoplethat come on and sya this garage did this and this garage did that... it's the first time i have actually seen a garage reply and say 'hang on a minute!' this is what happened and what we did....

Hi, sorry your having probs with your bike but there isnt much that cant be fixed. If the rattle is bad enough the only way to find out wat it is, is to take the rocker cover off and have a look and measure the valve clearances if your sure its an topend engine rattle. It could be something deaper but first things first. Its easy to do just take your time you'll be fine.

Well i have to say,
Fair play RevMoto for putting across your side of the story.
I would sure be keen to see the invoice if everyone involved would be happy with that?
You have answered the questions put to you with regard to the wheels, running the bike on the dyno and the jetting.
And if as you say Matt didn't/hasn't aproached you about the wheels then that is something that can be sorted.
One question you didn't answer was;
carrying out extra work at cost that you didn't advise Matt about untill the work had been completed?

Bad luck with bike matt regarding the tapping is it a high speed tapping or a slow knocking sound, and where abouts is it coming from. hopefully its nothing serious but best drop your oil as others have said refil and see if it persists.

@revmoto respect for coming out and giving your side not often seen.

Yes good point malc. The initial post does say he paid/was charged for oil and plugs i think? I would like a chance to apologise though if my initial rant was out of line, or to support a fellow 400gb'er that has had trouble. Since reading the response from revmoto, the bill for work done seems about what i would expect to pay for tyres and hours spent plus parts. Anyway talking is the key i think between the two parties. And i am sure this can be resolved. Anyway i have had my 2p worth.
