Thinking of selling Version R - but how much is she worth?

Post by alexibrow »

I want to get a bigger bike with better weather protection for the daily commute, and would love to keep the Version R and restore her to her former glory, but I don't have a garage or the money to buy another bike without selling the Version R.

So, does anyone have a rough idea of how much she might be worth? I'm hoping that she might make £1500...

1995, black, imported in 1997 by BAT Motorcycles. Unknown mileage.
Will have 12 months MOT.
Generally in good condition, a bit scruffy in places but obviously has been quite well looked after. Engine and gearbox are superb!

Good bits:
- Paintwork polishes up nicely, although there's the odd few chips and scuffs
- Engine is excellent
- Gearbox seems excellent too
- Brakes work well, and I've a full set of discs, calipers and master cylinders to go with.
- Scorpion can sounds wicked!
- Good tyres
- Chain & sprockets virtually new
- Scottoiler
- Has the original Showa shocks, and there's a spare pair of old but perfectly serviceable Hagons to go with it
- Everything works except the temperature light on the dash.
- MPH converter.

Has had the following work done since last October (6000 miles ago):
- New clutch
- New chain & sprockets
- New rear wheel bearing
- Good second-hand forks fitted (spare set need stanchions and fork seals)
- New rear tyre less than 1000 miles ago
- Brand new regulator / rectifier last week
- New battery last week as well!
- New throttle cables
- Oil & filter changed 3500 miles ago, and at 2500 miles before that (will change them again soon).
- K&N air filter
- Scorpion bolt-on can was fitted by the previous owner just before I bought it, sounds ace!
- Iridium spark plugs

Bad bits:
- Exhaust has surface rust that I'm planning to clean off, then repaint.
- Seat cover is beginning to wear through on a couple of the corners
- Rear brake isn't great but it works OK
- There's a slight knock from the front occasionally, think it's the calipers moving about but possibly could be play in the headstock.
- One of the shocks is leaking, and the springs & chromework on both are showing some rust.
- Engine could do with repainting as there's some flakiness in places and the ally is corroding underneath. It's not too bad, but if I had the time I'd fix it up to look better.

Here's a pic to give you an idea:

Thanks.

Heh heh, fair enough meno!

I can't decide what to get. I love the rush of the in-line four, but I'm toying with the idea of getting a torquey twin for a bit, to see how they feel.

I need more weather protection for the commute really, so I'm looking at a comfy sporty tourer I think!

A late model SV650-S might be fun and practical. Or for a reliable all rounder, maybe the CBR 600F.

Or if I have my hooligan head on when the money's in my hand, I might put a deposit down on the new Street Triple, which just looks and sounds awesome!

As it goes, the new-for-2008 Suzuki GSX-650F might fit the bill nicely as well!

Funnily enough, I was having a look at one in the car park at work today, and found myself surprised at how good it looks! Definitely worth considering methinks.

I think that sounds like a good price, probably the most you will get for it. The SV is a great bike, my girlfriend had an old style SV which got trashed by a friend and so we got a 2004 model with only 3500 miles on it, immaculate condition for £2850. I ride the SV quite a lot and its a great ride, nice and torquey plus cheap on the insurance. If your looking around try http://www.aardvarkmotorcycles.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as he is vey good and honest, otherwise its Destination triumph and a speed triple ;) :D :D

Thanks for the advice Ben, I do like the SV, although the styling of the old model looks really dated now! The new one looks the nuts though.

Although I'd love a Street Triple (the one with the 675cc engine IIRC), it's more of a summer ride than an all year round commuter I reckon. Maybe when I have a garage to put it in!

Funny though, today I was enjoying playing in the traffic on the Version R, and thinking how much I don't want to part with it! It's so much fun, but it's a bit too slow and has no fairing to speak of... aaargh!!

What to do :?:
