Starting/electrical problem...
Hi there, im new to this site and in need of some help...I bought a vfr400 nc30 92 reg a couple of months ago and it was running fine it just needed some parts changing.
After the big freeze I decided to start her up and nothing, because the battery was dead, got the battery charged by my local honda garage stuck it in and it was turning over but being a idiot I didnt connect the suction pipe for the fuel tap so I was confused for a while and then battery died again. decided to try dads car + jump leads and nothing (obviously) so decided it was the battery so bought a new battery and still...zilch
took everything apart and done some research and everything was how it was meant to be! then the main fuse kept and is still blowing when I connect the regulator/rec...so I disconnected it and it started! it was running for about 5-6 minutes so I thought to myself, lets see what happens if I switch it on and off, and then the fuse blew again and again!
Decided to open up the wiring and everything looks complete so taped it back up (temporarly) stuck in reg again and it got bloody hot and started smoking when I turned the ignition so quickly took it out and now im stuck... any ideas would be great..thanks
By the way, the fuse keep blowing even when I dont turn the ignition on...
And also the lower rad connection is not connected maybe that is causing some kind of problem....
Any ideas comments would be really helpful

Hi,
Sounds like you have a bad Reg/Rec and possibly the genny.
Do you know how to test these?

Re: Starting/electrical problem...
Yer, i had a very similar issue with my 35, It would start (badly) run for a while then stop.
It kept blowing fueses so could change them and it would work again, would run a bit lumpy then die. i could bump start it and run for a while, then as soon as i stopped at lights it would die.
It was the reg/rec on its way out, so got a new one, and problem solved

You could try posting in the forsale wanted section on here, you will most likely get a heavy duty replacement reg/rec for less than ebaymartiniandlime wrote:ye Im going to buy a reg soon and the gen? Everything worked before though...? hmmmm

If the genny is fecked, it won't be charging your battery properly, and if the battery is not getting a charge, it will soon run flat. worth checking if you have a multi meter, before you spend any money.

Okay most probably the reg/rec then.martiniandlime wrote:hmmm dont think anything is wrong with the gen...what do you mean by a heavy duty one?
This is heavy duty type;

and this is a less heavy duty type (no fins) I am sure that i will be corrected if i am wrong ( I am not an expert in electrical items

Hope this helps, The regulators on these are prone to blowing. you can upgrade to an R6 regulator if you wanted, do a search in the V4 workshop and you will find out how to do it

mmmmm,
I have one the same as you, tour max, and they do get VERY hot. best to check that it is working properly.
You could have something like cleaner or oil or something on the reg that is smoking?
