Ive seen worse welded up. its worth a shot, its a 50/50 thing, you might be lucky, you might not, i'd get a head just in case. You weld a little block on, drill it & tap it - i cant see that piece of broken rubbish being welded back on.

This may work if you use the header clamp to line the drill up? I fear access may be a problem tho...Morespeedvicar wrote:Hi, could you drill down a bit further and tap the hole and use a longer stud? you have to be mega carefull not to hit the water jacket/oil ways! maybe worth a try if heads nakered already.
Cheers

Überbodge: Is there any way you can strap the header to the head by using a very long jubilee-clip arrangement around the exhaust & back of the barrels so the bike can still be ridden without the header blowing?

the header still has 3 nuts holding it on and i mate sure not to over tighten them so they pulled that part of the manifold away, so hopefully it will be ok for a short period of time.
The old man said there should be enough spare metal there to drill and tap it and just use longer studs.
I kinda want to avoid a new head as much as possible, as i neither have the time/skill nor the garage to drop the engine and replace the head. If i did i would have no form of transport for however long.
Im going to re-fit the rear pipes tomorrow as long as the weathers good and i'll check if/or how much its blowing.

You can swap the head with the engine in the frame...it is not as difficult as you think...
A dirty bodge for now but I'd be worried about further damage and cracks spreading with the additional vibration.
sort it in the summer..

I feel your pain I have the exact same problem on my right down pipe
I'm runnng a full tyga system so its blowing a lot
I did a rough repair job in august mines not as bad as yours I only lost half the thread
Did a weld job to fix this has now failed
so I'm looking at a new head
And I just did my valve clearences so not happy
just wondering if you guys know wether all rear nc 30 heads are interchangeable i.e. a later head
on an 89 engine
Cheers alex

I'd repair it with some lumiweld etc rather than replace the cylinder head if you can't afford the time / expense of a stripdown.

It will be more than good enough to hold the exhaust stud providing you dont' torque it up to the extreme.
Very similar to this kind of thing.
