He's on about the link that connects the chain, you can either get a removable spring clip or a rivet(staked) link. The rivet links require a special tool to complete the link where as the clip links dont. the rivet links are obviously stronger and hence the prefered choice.DK-Tandy wrote:could you please define staked??Wozza wrote:Whatever chain you get, make sure you get it staked - don't be tempted to use the clip.
worth the risk or not?

Re: worth the risk or not?
you should have in theory on your rs50 a clip link on the chain - looks like a u shape ( kind of ), there was on my old rs125. your 400 should have a riveted link.
The load on a smaller bike is quite small hence the clip link, generally the bigger the bike, the bigger the load. Whilst taking my test and 4 days training there was a zx7r that had come in with a new chain and the guy had used a clip link.
the link broke and the chain decided to try and go though the engine, it was a real mess!

Rivet link http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DID-Gold-X-Ring-5 ... 2a08722f14
Split link http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Split-Link-TKR-DI ... 5196c3369a
Ignore the chain weights its just so you can tell the difference between the 2
For what its worth tho id go for the 520 weight chain and sprockets over the 525, 525 is overkill on a 400. I run a 520 weight chain on a 130bhp gsxr with no issues so ive no doubt it'll be man enough for a 400.

Just out of interest, would a 525 chain not last longer though?Drunkn Munky wrote: For what its worth tho id go for the 520 weight chain and sprockets over the 525, 525 is overkill on a 400. I run a 520 weight chain on a 130bhp gsxr with no issues so ive no doubt it'll be man enough for a 400.
DK keep in mind that wont be the total price, you still need to add a chain tool (or a bike shop that will put the chain on for you) to your expenses.

Search for chain tool on ebay, theres loads but ive heard horror storys about cheap ones. I got mine direct from talon uk, its a RK branded one and its about as heavy duty as they come, excellent piece of kit but about £80 i think.
