hi everyone.

sorry that my first post here at the forum is a desperate shout for help!

i have a G plate nc-23 rr-k ( i think ) and its giving me hell.

i bought the bike as a non runner 4 months ago from a young lad who was ( with his dad ) trying to turn it into a track bike by the looks of it, and doing it badly! fairings were all fit for the bin to be honest but i tided them up, filler etc and sprayed them off. they came up ok and flogged them on ebay.

the carbs were not seated properly, well they were just placed on. i pretty much stripped the bike down and put it back together to make sure all was fitted correctly. went to start it and took ages, like 1hr and huge backfires!.

i took the plugs out, cleaned them, re-gapped them and heated them up before putting them back in. i cleaned the carbs out and they were full of grime and crud. checked the ht leads and they are very stiff to move. anyway, after refilling the carbs from a few turn overs she spluttered into life with a few backfires beforehand. couldnt take it off the choke for awhile but when i could it sounded sweet and i left it running for 30 mins before taking it for a quick spin in my street.

on take off it bogged down, flick of the clutch and it went like a t*at. i thought it was all sorted then bam! a week later i went to start it and nothing, just big backfires. it tries to start but just backfires.

probs i can see....

the rectifier has been modded by the looks of it. its the cast fin type. the wires have be manually cut and added to the rec and one wire goes off to the starter solenoid...is this correct?

the green wire ( may have been added ) that goes from 1 coil to the ground earth was melted. i replaced but still nothing. is there soposed to be an earth from the coil body itself to the frame or engine?

ht leads are old and frail. very stiff to move about.



i once again took the carbs apart, cleaned until spotless, re fitted tried to start after a sonic boom! she fired up :o didnt sound right though, sounded like it was only running on 3 cylinders :cry:

i had a spare set of plugs and fitted them and its still the same........i checked the spark on each lead and the cylinder to the very right of the engine looking forward from the tank has a very weak spark that arks towards the thread of the plug and not where it should. changed it with another plug and the same thing happened.

i have bought a set of coils and leads from ebay second hand but guaranteed to be working.....waiting for them to arrive. ive also ordered some ngk iridium plugs.



so my main questions are...

is there soposed to be an earth from both coil pack bodys or 1 OR none at all to the engine or frame?

how do you know if the rec is shot?

would the cdi cause these problems? ( i dont know which one i have as the sticker is missing. could be blue or gold )

im thinking about just making a race harness for it so i can get the engine running sweet. any ideas how i go about this? are there diagrams available? or can someone here make one at cost?

i got the coils today, fitted and no change.

can someone tell me the firing order please? is it 1-2-4-3 and which is cylinder #1 if im sitting on the bike looking forward? i also need to double check the numbers on the coils, ie@ right coil 1 + 4 left 2 + 3?

it is going to be 1432 for firing order I reckon..

Hi,
Firing order is 1243, coils are 1 and 4, 2 and 3, 1 cylinder being the near side (left).
The wiring at the coils is blue/yellow tracer from cdi to 2/3 and then to fuel cutoff relay, Yellow/blue tracer from cdi to 1/4 and then to fuel cutoff relay + black/white from cdi to both coils and then to kill switch. This is from a service manual so if wrong not my fault, ask if you need more info.

i have ordered a haynes manual for my bike but came across a free download of it here http://netfree1.blogspot.com/2009/04/ho ... anual.html appears to be the full manual.

i found the firing order and cylinder numbers too. from left to right the cylinders are 1-2-3-4 and firing order is 1-2-4-3.

i put the leads in the correct order and its still the same. i have a feeling i have to change the carbs.

Don't just change the carbs, they can be easily sorted, just need a can of carb cleaner and some time, and they should be fine, check that the kill switch is nice and clean internally, mine got furred up and effectively left the switch on. I pushed it home, got the bodywork off, and after hours of arsing about with plugs, coils earths etc, I cleaned up the kill switch and it fired first time :x Might not fix yours, but worth a try :up:

thanks for the advice, kill switch is next on the list.

i took the carbs apart again and where the float valves sit, i undid the nut and pulled the cylinders out ( if you know what i mean? ) 3 had small filters on the end, one hasn't..........the one i thought was over fueling. i cleaned everything again, even though it was spotless :| and put them back together.

i filled the carbs with fresh fuel ready to put back on the bike and all was well until i thought.....i should clean the choke mech up a little. i didnt take anything apart, just gave it the once over on the outside, pulled the choke out and i had 4 waterfalls of petrol.....i mean it was gushing out. <------ is this normal? im thinking not!

you have managed to unseat the float needles - get in the carbs again and do one at a time and get them clean and all sorted.

We've all been there (apart from the people with more money than sense)

Stick at it, you'll sort it and the bike will love you for it.. :grin:
