Must have spares??

Hi Chaps,

New to the forum having picked up my 89 VFR 400 on Monday. The VFR is going to be predominantly a track bike but I also want to get her looking like new as I will use her on the road occasionally. ( she's in pretty good shape already) After reading through lots of topics and posts what do you guys carry around with you spares/tools wise.

I have already got a few spare 30amp fuses stashed in the bike.

Clutch/throttle cables?
Was going to pick up a spare Reg/rec?

Anything else?

I carry a tyre repair kit, the worm pipe cleaner type with the little CO2 canisters for re-inflating. Nothing worse than getting a flat in the middle of nowhere. I also tend to carry a selection of blade fuses (7.5A, 10A, 15A, 20A, 30A), a couple of spare relays, about a metre of 1mm wire and a load of crimp terminals with an all in one cutter/stripper/crimper tool. Also, a 6" adjustable wrench, multi-bit screwdriver, cable ties, jubilee clips, various bits of fuel hose and vacuum hose, a couple of spare brake caliper bleed nipples, tyre valves, small machine screws and nyloc nuts (temporary chain repair amongst other things).

Oh, and my RAC card, not that I've ever needed it yet

Bloody hell , all i carry is my phone so i can ring my dad to come and pick the bike up in his van.

Hang on these are VFR's aint they, why bother with tools???

R.A.C card, mobile phone and failing that a bit of cloth and a lighter for smoke signals ....

Back to the OP I carry nothing when im just going for a blast but if im going abroad for a few days I put a pair of levers, some gaffa tape, a set of spare footpegs and a fuse+bulb kit plus a Topeak multi tool and thats about it. Im not a crasher but would hate to be abroad and stuck due to a small drop that has broke a lever ...

As with any used bike purchase just change the cables regardless of condition for piece of mind, give the electics a quick look over and you should be fine..

Ah, I should have said when I go away and not for short day bimbles. If I'm off for a weekend around Scotland or Wales, the above kit is a standard part of my touring pack and all fits inside a sandwich box inside my tail pack.

have an old laptop power supply bag which goes under the seat on my older bikes. in it...

visor cleaning stuff
some cloths
disposable gloves
duct tape
cable ties
stubby screwdriver with bits to get seat unit/panels off etc
a couple of small spanners
spare contact lenses and ear plugs
small swiss army knife


more compact and light than it sounds and has got me out of trouble more than once. always have phone and AA card (hic) in jacket pocket as even new bikes can go wrong (had that happen more than once and got stranded)
