NC30 rear wheel spacer

Hi guys,

so Im in the middle of restoring my little nc30 to its former glory, when I came upon a small problem whilst removing the rear wheel today.

So Ive got the split pin, 36mm nut and washer off the spindle and am left with a funny almost castleatted looking spacer attached to the wheel. The haynes manual seems to suggest tha it just easily slips off, but this is where im having trouble.

Its completely stuck there... Ive tried tapping it with a rubber mallet, and pulling,pushing and generally wobbling the rear wheel around but both the spacer and wheel are attached firmly.

Ive had a search round here but couldnt pull up anything on the matter.

Is there a special tool available to remove the spacer? is it always this stuck?

I cant think of any other ways of getting it off without damaging it.

Mate. It's not threaded it's just stuck! Spray some wd40 around the edge and give it a whack! If it's that's tight the wheel will be too it's just a matter of loosening the corrosion!

Have you managed to get your wheel off or is it stuck too? The spacer I think you mean is simply that and isn't fixed to the wheel.
What I'd do is put the wheel nut back on, not fully but at least half a turn on and bray the hell out of the wheel with a rubber hammer or piece of wood. Even using a piece of wood as a chisel and hitting it with a BIG hammer. It will give up eventually, hopefully before you do.
Application of a bit of lateral force ought to shift your spacer when it's off the bike, a screwdriver, a hammer and a gentle tap should do.
If your wheel's been on your bike a while it'll need a fair bit of persuasion. When you put your wheel back on I use a smearing, and I mean a thin layer (cos have you seen the price of it?) of copper grease.

Just go out tonight and spray some wd on it ! Tomorrow it will have worked.

I had exactly the same problem, which I fixed using pure distilled brute force. I walloped it on the side with a rubber hammer against a screwdriver against one of the 'flats' of the castellated washer and it finally popped off.

I bought a bike from somebody with an allergic reaction to grease, so have been slowing stripping bits off and copaslipping them. Nothing like some tlc :)

Well I managed to get the spacer off eventually, but the wheel remains stuck on... for now...

after about half an hour of bashing the wheel laterally (poor bearings), I eventually got too cold and decided to head inside and wait for the snow to stop with a brew in hand. Two days later its still snowing and im having a hard time trying to convince myself to head out and carry on abusing the rear wheel

At the moment Ive got the a paddock stand in the rear and the front end of the bike suspended from the garage rafters as Im servicing the forks. As Im waiting for parts to arrive for the forks I thought I'd get the rear wheel out but the continual bashing at the rear is making the whole bike swing from side to side and its making me feel quite nervous. I think il finish the forks first and get the front end back on the ground, then concentrate on the rear when the bike is a bit more stable.

It's obvious that wheel hasn't been off for a while. Just perservere and you'll get there.
