Has anyone fitted the CBR600RR or GSXR shock to an NC30/35??

Re: Sorting out Suspension on my NC35
I threw out the shock on my NC30 and replaced it with a 03/04 CBR600 shock. It was a direct bolt on with the added bonus on a little bit of height, as I had changed my 18' rear wheel to an RVF 17'. According to the YSS shock site (Thailand) the CBR600rr uses the same size shock in the 03 - 06 model.

I had to make a mod to my battery box, otherwise it was a direct fit.

Re: Sorting out Suspension on my NC35
I've been quoted $100 to get a CBR600/gixxer 600 shock installed in my RVF, plus $180 if I want the shock serviced first, and another $200 if it needs a spring.
I then talked to RB Imports and they say the CBR6/gixxer6/rs250 shocks are no good, because they run at a different ratio to the RVF shock. They suggested the best thing to do is get a late model VFR shock with the remote reservoir (something like that) and get that rebuilt and installed. But the rebuilding and installation of that would cost me 4 arms and 3 legs. (For the same price I could probably get a good aftermarket shock installed)...
What do you guys think? RB know what they're talking about, but does the differing ratio mean a whole lot if I'm just riding on the road and an occasional track day? I really like the look of the CBR6/gixxer600 shocks, and it's only going to cost me $100-150 to get one, plus $100 for installation. Plus I'd probably pay the $180 to get it serviced...
Cheers

If you dont have the cash for a maxton or similar then a cbr/gsxr shock is going to be better than you have now. It'll work much better once you've had it revalved properly which is more money so you gota weigh that up against getting a decent shock instead, not sure what prices are like out there but 2nd hand maxtons can be had for £275. Its hardly worth messing about at that price.

That's what I have on my racebike (with a few bits added), it's awesome. It is pricey, and probably overkill if you just plan to do the odd trackday here and there.jonno92 wrote:They suggested the best thing to do is get a late model VFR shock with the remote reservoir (something like that) and get that rebuilt and installed. Go for a cbr/gsx-r shock in good condition (forget a rebuild - you can find newish ones for cheap out there), fit it up and you're good to go. It will be an improvement over your tired standard shock.

Re: Sorting out Suspension on my NC35
RB tells me not to do this because of the difference in ratio (what does this mean?) between them and the RVF shock. I don't think it will affect me with the riding that I'm doing though.Cammo wrote:Go for a cbr/gsx-r shock in good condition (forget a rebuild - you can find newish ones for cheap out there), fit it up and you're good to go. Spoke to the guys at Teknik Suspension in Penrith and they were awesome. They said installation will probably set me back $80-100. If I am to get it serviced it will cost me another $180 + parts, and a new spring will be $198 if required.
Therefore, I want to get a shock which is sprung properly as standard (they suggested the cbr ones are a little harder than the gixxer ones, which may be too soft) to save myself spending $198 on a new spring. And I'm hoping if I get a shock that's only 4 or 5 years old, it won't need a service (I'll make sure I check it out thoroughly before purchasing).
So it's going to set me back the cost of a shock ($100-150) + installation (let's say $100) = extremely cheap for a much better shock! Although I might be young and ignorant and get the spring powdercoated blue or red ($40-50)

So, my questions:
1) Does anyone know if the CBR600 or gixxer ones are sprung properly as standard? Or any idea how I would find out information as to how they are sprung, and what I need them to be sprung to in order for it to suit an RVF400 with a 70kg rider?
2) What implications will the difference in ratio mean?
3) Is the only advantage of the remote reservoir that the oil and components in the reservoir don't get hot? (which is probably a big thing on an NC, due to the location of the rear exhaust outlets)
Thanks guys!!

Until you start challenging for club wins I doubt you could go wrong with any of the shocks you've mentioned.

So you think an 06-07 GSXR600 or 03-06 CBR600 standard spring will be fine, Cammo?

It will be an improvement over a tired old standard shock.
FWIW there are some peeps that race using these, they can't be half bad.

Re: Sorting out Suspension on my NC35
OK well I've looked at every thread on this forum that talks about cbr600 shocks or gsxr shocks.
From what I have read, the gsxr ones are extremely soft so it's not exactly going to solve my problem very effectively. The 03-06 CBR600RR ones seem to be sprung quite heavy. Looks like it will still require some modification to install (couldnt find any details about how much of the battery box needs to be cut) though, but it's probably the best option. I guess I should try and source a 600RR shock and hand it over, along with my bike, to a place that specialises in suspension and hope they can make it fit
If anyone has any more info regarding getting a shock from a different bike to fit the NC35, I would love to hear
Thanks

Don't know what RB are playing at with the "different ratio" argument Jonno. Sounds like porkies
to me.
Best option:
Rick Oliver
Acceptable Options:
Re-co VFR/CBR/GSXR
Re-co RVF shock
Either way, all of those will feel better than standard. And get a jack up plate if you can
