Please Help..

Ok so i have a few questions,

1. My fork seals are leaking, what damage can be done to them if i leave it for to long? and how long is to long?

2. On the weekend, i drove my RVF to the shops and back about, 40 mins in totall, turned the moto of with the key like normal. then i wanted to go out about an hour later, and my RVF was struggling to start, it wasnt a problem with idle, and it had plenty of fuel, so i left it for a while, and then came back the next day, to find that the battery has died (at least im assuming its that) i can hear the starter motor turn, but theres just a clicking sound like a dead battery. So could it be my battery? And i thought that batterys didnt just die like that?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated...

1. Get new fork seals pronto. You don't want fork oil pissing all over your brake pads, rotar etc.............not nice and quite unsafe. Check to see if you have stone chips on the fork sliders as this is a common way of fork seals leaking. Rub your hands up and down all over them erhhhmmm, and you might feel tiny rough spots. If you do, get some wet and dry sandpaper, dunk it in warm water with detergent and gently rub in a non erotic manner, the fork slides where you feel the chips. Do this until the chips feel smooth and the forks sliders have a smile on their face.

2. Maybe your regulator/rectifier is knackered? The clicking sound would almost mean that you battery has crossed over and you may need a new one. If you have a charger then charge it and see how that goes.

I got quoted 350 for the new fork seals + labor from my local shop.

Well it is a 1994 RVF400 so maybe its the original battery, but i didnt think they just died like that which is why im a little worried? I will look into charging it or replacing it and see how that goes..

Fork seals leaking is not someting you leave... get them sorted. You can do it yourself for a couple hours time and the cost of seals and oil. it is not difficult

Reg rec is common failure - get a searh on for the measurements to check where the charging system is faulty.

I got quoted 350 for the new fork seals + labor from my local shop.

£15 max for a pair of genuine Honda seals, £10 for fork oil and about 2 hours to do the job.

£162.50 per hour for labour?!?!?!?!?!?!


If you're anywhere near Blackburn, I'll do the job for £50.

I'm guessing that's going to be Australian dollars, but still, just over £200 is pricey.

The ZXR USD forks are a pain to do compared to traditional forks, how easy are the RVF ones to change?

You can get geunine Honda seals (i really recommend these for longevity over aftermarket ones) for £13.25 ($21 aud) per side.

So for under $65 including oil you can have all the parts you need.

I'd spend time with the service manual and people on here and do it yourself :-)

So long as you take time you shouldn't have any problems.

Dont' leave them as if it gets on the brakes / wheels you'll crash, i've done it before.

As said, check the tubes for pitting, but fork seals do wear out over time.

Well just an update...
Went out and got a new battery today put it in and she fired up straight away :)
all is well

i would still go through the electrical checks as soon you may find that the new battery is dead soon too. There probably was a reason for ther old one dieing...
