76a Carb tops

Post by monkers » Fri Sep 10, 2010 11:49 pm

Have the carbs off the bike again, as Tony Sleep says, and I laughed when I read it thinking that it wouldn't ever be me, it gets easier after 10 or more times!! Still running rough after O ring change but to be fair I wasn't that clued up about what I was doing as it was my first time. I have balanced them but it revs then holds itself at anything between 2-4K. When it finally lets itself down it does nor tick-over, just dies. If I play with the idle thumb screw it just makes the holding high revs on it's own worse. Also, if I fill up the tank to the top with fuel the bike leaks petrol all over the shop. At first I thought it was the easy to connect ( ) fuel lines so I added some jubilee clips. It still happened so looked a bit harder and of course it turned out to be the carbs overflowing. So, must be my piss poor installation of the new O rings causing various "sticking" bits internally. All in bits again, have knackered a screw that holds the float perch in place, dunno where I'm going to get another similar one from and I have managed to break one of the inlets from the top of the carb where you connect it to a balancer. Does anyone by chance have a spare one kicking about? Glued a bit of rubber hose to it for the time being but not ideal. Anyway, to cut a short story long I will be rebuilding them all again this weekend with the hope that I get it right this time around. If you do know where I can get a replacement float perch screw or have a carb top spare please let me know. ;)

your running issues are all in the set up. The leaking is float height or a sticking float valve. I'll ring you later a talk you through it if you want?

Cheers both, you have a pm Si. Thanks Darren, I admit I did not check the float heights when I had them apart before, :spank: Will check it all properly this time. I see that I can even balance them with the tank on, bit fiddly but it is possible. Much better than the temp fuel tank arrangement. Glad I bought that 90' screwdriver now ( apart from it comes in it's own special box, I love tools that come in their own box..ooeerr nursing a semi now :sex:
How were the moules et frites? Mad strength beer there as I remember too.

Cheers Ian

Update: Thanks Si for the carbs, robbed loads. Rebuilt carbs, honestly not entirely happy with all the O rings on the jet holder, even though I know they where new when I fitted first time . Am sure it is because I wasn't entirely clued up with what I should be doing.
Anyway, carbs are rebuilt, float height checked, all at 20mm or 0.1 close enough. Put back onto bike, stupidly tried to bypass not taking out battery, air filter, to put back in. Please don't try to skip this bit, it will only slow you down as you have to do it anyway.
Picked up tank that was resting on a mat. Small puddle of petrol visible on mat, strange, the the left hand I had picked up the tank noticed a strange feeling under the first finger. On closer inspection it turned out to be a small rust hole. Absolute bloody luck I picked the tank up that way, it's at the front by the rim. So that answers the problem of petrol everywhere when I fill the tank to the brim. It drips from the hole, down the bottom of the the tank till it finds the lowest point, above the carbs, then drips. Of course I didn't strip them to fix just this problem. It was the hanging onto the revs too. Need a replacement tank then, or go through the crap of repairing this one. At this point I lost interest I am afraid and never actually fired the bike.

So:
1) Need to drain existing tank of the premium 99 fuel that is in it. Replace tank with a non leaking one.
2) Fire it up to see if the rebuild I did fixed it or if it didn't
3) Replace jet holder O rings or think 'fuck it' and replace the whole lot again.
4) Check insurance and if good set fire to the garage and claim for a new bike and my collection of tools. All Snap-On of course (coff)

Thats me so far

Rebuilt carbs, it seems to run ok. Good stuff. Tank still leaks tho. Tried some tank putty, guess I didn't get it right or it's just naff. Anybody got a spare tank kicking about? Worth an ask.

Have you tried any of those epoxy resin based tank sealers? I've used them a lot on Lambretta's, which suffer from rust flakes getting into the carbs.

I haven't mate, do you have to prep the tank first? Fill it full of nails and then stripper etc? Or can I drain the petrol and chuck it in? The stuff I used was a 50/50 mix stuff like body filler.

Stuff called Pet seal is good, I used it on a rusty FZR tank and it stopped filling up the filter with rust.
You do need to clean the inside of the tank though.
8-)

Just read that standard pet seal is no good for ethenal in the fuel these days! it disolves in the petrol
Pet seal ultra is ok though, (can't remember what I used) :x
