Carbies making popping noises.

Hello everyone.

I just reinstalled a lot of the parts onto the bike after I did a valve clearance check on it.
I rotated the engine before I put everything back making sure it turned over easily. Plugged the battery in and turned her over without an exhaust or fuel tank...just to see if the bike would still turn over pretty much.

As it kicks over I can hear the starter motor working as it should, but I can now hear popping noises coming from the carbies...I assume that compressed air is being released from the cylinder, but I thought it would have come from the exhaust. Unless my hearing is wrong and I pin pointed it coming from the wrong location, I am worried I may have done something wrong...mainly because I don't remember it doing this before.

If someone can shed me some light that would be great :).

PS: I managed to drop the bike when I was moving it out of the house . Fortunately only the rear set bent (which can be bent back...YAY!) since I had no fairings on it, unfortunately, it was on the side that wasn't damaged from the crash .

Sounds like your carbs are full of fuel that's not burning. Have you checked for a spark?

Wasn't trying to start it. Was just checking if it would turn over after I put everything back together.

There is no fuel in the carbs. Carbs were pulled apart to check jetting and also giving it a clean. It's as dry as a desert.

I haven't checked for spark yet. Will check it once I try to get the engine running though :).

Just more worried about the popping/gurgling noise it makes and wondering if it is normal.

Sounds as it should with no exhaust on Nothing to worry about.

Put her back together and add some fuel and she'll be sweet

Ahhh, thanks. I will make a small tank to trial run it while I fix the actual fuel tank. Fingers crossed it will idle properly :D.

Have you seen that NC30 tank on Aus eBay? Seems decently priced for what it is.

Yeah I have. Was going to buy it but need a muffler first. I can still reuse my tank, just needs a little TLC and should be good :). However a second tank would be nice.

If the carb sealing rubbers arent properly seated, it may be drawing air, hence a sucking/gurgling sound. if you try start with fuel & it is drawing air, it'l be very hard to get going

I am sure they are seated properly. I followed the guide and there is less than 5mm gap between the rubber and the end of carbie base. It was a pain in the ass to put back on, but after some perseverance, swearing and jumping on them, they popped into place and I checked from every hole I could see through to make sure they were level.

I will keep that in mind once I try and start it with fuel and an attached exhaust :).
