NC23 Carb/spark problems...

Post by sparkster71 »

I've just put a D reg NC23 Aero back on the road after its enforced retirement, but it just seems at the minute to be one thing after another... I just want to get out and ride it but I'm having no joy... just wondering if anyone can help out??

Basically, its passed the MOT (after freeing off a siezed rear brake unit) but when riding its running very lumpy, but after 8-10k rpm, goes really well. Up to then its crabby, stalling now and then and not responding too well to starting with the choke. Cylinder 2 was not firing well, but a replacement plug seems to have solved that. Now, Cylinder 1 is playing up, and I'm getting fuel chucked out of the carbs despite them having been cleaned not 2 months ago... I got covered in petrol on the way home from work the other night and the bike was only running on 3 cylinders which caused the petrol tank to empty via the carbs... great.

I've swapped the plug out for another (used) one but cylinder 1 is still messing about and fouling the plug. Can't work out what's going on, but if there's any simple checks I can do, I'd be very chuffed. I'm new to the NC23 world so would appreciate any pointers that any of you more experienced fellas (or ladies) can offer.

Cheers in advance!

Have you made sure your carbs are reset to standard settings? That's all jet sizes, pilot screw setting, float and needle heights. Then get the carbs balanced. Check the carb rubbers are a good fit etc.

Nice one Wozza, thanks for that - will do as you said, set everything back to scratch, and also I have contacted Mr France about some new needles and seats for the Carbs - hopefully that'll sort it and I can get out to have a bit of fun on it.

Came home last night and my Dad had stripped the bike down ready for work whilst I was out so that's a big chunk of the work done - he's spot on - retired and for hire if anyone wants him - He's only happy when covered in oil and swarf!

Will let you know how it goes.

Cheers!

Right - have checked settings and all seem ok - one float is not the same as the others though, so does anyone know the correct float height for a CBR400RG 1986 Aero please? I'm struggling to find anything on the 'net at the mo...

Cheers!
