Help identifying my NC30

Post by BillingCBR »

Hi all, I'm a little confused as to what model my NC30 is, the sticker in the underseat tray says it's an NC30RIIIK, but I was led to believe that the 'K' bikes had different fork adjusters (no preload?) Yet mine has the full adjustment tops :| Also that the rear shocks didn't have the little oil reservoir on it, which again, mine has.

The way I see it there's 3 possibilities;

-The undertray was replaced with one bearing the wrong sticker
-The bits off the later bikes have been grafted onto this one
-My info is wrong and it's fine, and has the same setup it left the factory with.

As ever, any help is greatly appreciated :)

The K bikes do have preload, but no damping adjusters

I'll go for the easiest and most obvious - that a 21 year old bike has benefitted from newer forks and shock at sometime in it's life.

Is it in RWB scheme?

in 21 years of ownership i am sure the shock and forks may gave been changed around.
most likely it is a K bike which some one has changed the forks on one year and then the rear shock got saggy some time later and that was replaced on the cheap.

the problem with the vast majority of the NC30 is they are learner bikes who have been owned by impoverish folk, hesitant to spend money on after-market expensive kit.

What year is it? That's usually the easiest way to tell! Get a couple of pics up and I'm sure people will be able to pick it apart pretty quickly and tell you what's what

K series are 1989 bikes - the only year with damping rod forks with no dampign adjuster. ALl others have the cartridge forks with adjusters.

I believe that that is the question at hand

If you have a Haynes manual, just check your engine and frame numbers and all will be revealed :peace:

Hi all, thanks for the replies, I'll go find the V5 and have a look at the numbers on there (bike is 2 miles away, whereas the V5 is here lol) It's registered as a '91 bike and has an aftermarket paint scheme (looks crap, but done to a good quality), so I'm not too sure. Saying that the DVLA don't always get it right, my NC23 is registered on an '89 F, not the '88 E it should be, I know for a fact it's the '88 bike because it has the CDI, air tubes, paint scheme and chassis numbers for that year :P

I'll let you know what the V5/Haynes check comes up with :peace:

looks like it is an '89 'k' model bike, with later forks as the damping adjustment is present. It's chassis number begins NC30-101. I'll double check to seewhich shock it has onthe back too

As Superlight says, the numbers are the way to go. Mines a 91 on paper but check the frame number and it's an 89.
I'd guess that, faced with a load of Japanese documents, the importers took a best guess attitude to year of manufacture
