'99 R6 Tailunit on 4DX
After seeing the worlds most beautiful NC30 on a trackday t' other week, I feel that I should plan sone asthetical changes to the 4DX.
I dont want it to look out of place or like a chavvy bolt on, but I am thinking of a r6 Tailunit to thin down the back end a bit.
Has anyone seen this done? Any help or advice? Any idea on the differance in lenghs of the two?
To make matters a little more difficult for myself I want to try and keep a pillion rear seat, latch, lock etc... So no race units for me.
As always any help would be appriciated, or advice on what you think would look good or work better.
I'm bidding on a bent subframe on eBay for 99p to offer it up and see but if anyone can share some wisedom and help i'll get the cyber beers in!

well we haven't had this for a few months ... the best thing is to leave it alone.
The R6 is a design classic ... even if it's derived from and R1
And so is the 3TJ / 4DX but more so because the FZR100RU was more derived from it, it being on the Japanese market and all.
With the amount of money / time / effort your about to spend you could acutally improve the bike, suspension, wheels, tyres, brakes, 600 engine .... all would be more valid than altering how the bike looks, imo.
You'll need a subframe, both saddles (the riders saddle doesn't fit the 3TJ tank very well) bodywork, pillion pegs, lights and number plate hanger / tail tidy.
The bottom line though is this ... if you want an R6 go and buy an R6

Re: '99 R6 Tailunit on 4DX
ive seen a few done and personally i think they look a bit out of place on a 3tj .ive never seen one and thought that looks good, though its all a matter of taste, one of the best was a seat unit from a triumph 675 daytona(albeit a single race seat) and it suited the lines nicely.personally id have a look at the bdk website as they have a couple of race tail units for the 3tj that look awsome though the carbon one is expensive have look here http://www.bdkraceeng.co.uk/Bike1.html scroll down the page and have a look, but if you buy and fit one ill hate you for ever
.still if you want to put an r6 seat unit on go for it and make sure you post plenty of pics and let us all know how you did it-good luck!!

My opinion is that the 3tj is a timeless classic, a baby OWO1. Hard to believe its a 20 year old design and people frequently ask why mine is on a G plate. Personally its best left alone after all there is nothing more rewarding then out cornering considerably more expensive newer machinery on trackdays, "yes my bike IS 20 years old!!!"
Re: '99 R6 Tailunit on 4DX
Not from a '99 but both the seat unit and faring are from an 03-05
Ignore the mix-n-match paintjob!

They just all seem to stick out at the back a bit to much for me. For racing, yes why not if it helps but as far as i'm concerned, for the road it's like taking a mk1 escort mexico and sticking a bmw x5 rear end on it to make it look better
Embrace what you have, be proud not ashamed. Ive had a Daytona 650 and an R6 and they are both much bigger bikes. What about a back end off one of these new R whatever 125 things or aprillia 125 or something, that might look more proportionate (is that a real word?)

Re: '99 R6 Tailunit on 4DX
I have had a first gen R6 tail mocked up on a 1WG and a 3TJ. The R6 tail was too large and looked out of place on the FZRs. I have a Ducati 748 tail that looks much better on either bike. Now I just need to paint and mount it to the 1WG. If it wasn't for want of a more comfortable pillion, I would leave it alone. Too much old school cool in the original styling.

To be honest thats not the best shot, it makes it look more out of proportion than it really is

I just the pillion saddle refoamed and hah a sillicon pad on top - my pillion is very with that. It's about an inch thicker than stock too so it raises her up a bit so she can see more and doesn't squash her legs so muchRoadDogma wrote:If it wasn't for want of a more comfortable pillion, I would leave it alone.
