RVF400 lags a 'lil - Clean carbs? Adjust chain? Plugs?

Post by silentRVF »

Hey guys,
I've had my RVF for just over a week, and it seems that the bike lags a little bit under acceleration. It seems like it doesn't have all that much power until it hits 6 or 7k RPM.. Is this normal for an NC35?

I know my chain is way too loose (about 30-40mm play in it), and I need to get myself a single sided swingarm stand so I can adjust it, but even when you're already accelerating in low revs and then hit it a bit harder it lags a bit.. So the chain wouldn't be the cause of that as well..

I haven't taken the tank off and cleaned the air filter yet, but I will do that within the next week.

Questions:
1) Could it maybe be dirty carbs? Are dirty carbs a common problem on the NC35s? I know it's a common problem on the CBR250's.
2) Are the carbs easy to remove and clean? I've cleaned the carbs on my CBR250RR without much trouble but I heard the RVF carbs are alot harder to remove..
3) Can you adjust the chain without the pro arm adjusting tool?
4) Are the spark plugs easy to remove? They are iridium plugs which are about 10 months old and have done 5,500kms. Should I replace them or just clean them? The bike always starts perfectly so I don't think they are stuffed..

Cheers guys :peace:

Hi mate the carbs on my rvf were hard to put back because the rubber is old so it's still. So what I done was took the rubbers off, put them in hot water so they can get soft, dried them , then the carbs went on easy

I would take your carbs out and give them a good clean

As u only had the bile for a week I would give the bike a good service, new oil ( I used semi synth), new plugs and filter.

As for you adjusting your chain I would invest in a stand and the tool. Tool is about £13 from
eBay, David silver spares, weemoto ect ect

U can adjust it using a flat screw driver and hammer but its not recommended as u can mess the teeth up on the adjuster.

Thanks for the advice, mate. I just tightened the chain - I'm going to go for a ride soon to test if it made much of a difference.. I have also done the oil and oil filter as well, using semi-synthetic oil.

Does K&N make an air filter for the RVF400? On their website the RVF400 isn't listed but I think I saw a K&N air filter and oil filter combo for the RVF400...??

EDIT: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/K-N-KN-Air-Filte ... ycle_Parts.. So I need a HA1202 K&N air filter, right?

EDIT2: http://www.knfilters.com/search/applica ... od=HA-1202 The K&N website says this filter is for an RS125.. Does the RVF400 take the same air filter?..

Being a hi reving sports bike most of the power is up top. Plenty of go past 10 or 11 though.
Dirty carbs are a symptom of dirty fuel. Not a problem I've ever had myself.
Have a look at the V4 workshop section where you'll find a sticky thread on carb jetting. Plenty of photos about getting the carbs off, raising the needles 0.5mm to take out a flat spot.
You should really use a C spanner for the chain. I get a set of different sized one from a market stall for a few quid. A local garage might lend you one for an hour in the mean time.
Spark plugs take a bit of getting at but not too bad. 13mm long reach socket to get 'em out. See what they look like before you bin them. If they look ok give them a gentle clean and check the gaps.

Cheers,

My NC35 is the same. Takes a while to get going but when it does its mental. If im in a 'go fast' mood then i generally just stay in the lower gears to keep the revs up.

Also, you dont need a stand to sdjust the chain, its also one of the most easiest jobs you can do! (if you have the spanner in the honda tool kit).

They make 8mm iridium plugs?

And I wouldn't change the standard filter you'll have all kinds of jetting problems.

Giving the carbs a service isn't too difficult and will help rule out any problems.

They do if u can find them lol
Wouldn't want to know how much they r tho. A STD set for my rvf were something like £9 each plug maybe a bit less

Have you got the plug number off these plugs? I've never seem 8mm iridiums, curious to see whats in there.

ER9EH / ER8EH's are generally used..
