Help - Is a hot Frame normal?!

Post by Ade »

Hi there, Nice to meet you all

I am a newbie to this forum - and indeed to the V4 - picked up my first NC30 (1989) last night for my better half . I have to say it runs and handles beautifully , just needs a bit of TLC , but when I got it home (after approx 30miles or so) the frame was incredibley hot , and whilst riding it I noticed that the inside of my left thigh was getting hot also - I have read on the forum that these beauties do run hot - and that because of the engine configuartion it is normal for the seat to get nice and warm - but is the heated thigh and frame getting very hot normal!?
The temp guage didn't seem to indicate any serious overheating issues , so thought I would seek advice from those who know before I start pulling things apart and making matters worse!!!
Apologies if this is a dumb question - but I'm sure it will be the first of many that I post

thanks all
Ade

Welcome Ade,

Yes..simple as that. They get bloody hot and in hot weather and in town the bike will frazzle your thighs.

In winter you can just put your hands on the frame to warm them up...

The bikes run really hot so cooling systems have to be looked after well, you'll know on a hot summers day if your cooling system is upto spec!

So long as it doesn't boil over the frame is usually toasty!

Main weak-points on these systems is the lower rad, it tends to get covered in crap and stone abused... just a heads up that you might need to get the rad off and give it a soak in degreaser overnight and straighten the fins with a fin-comb if you do get heat problems.

That'll depend on if we actually have any decent weather this year and yours is in bad shape

But yep, I wouldn't worry about anything for the time being, all souds normal! ;)
