Gearbox woes

sorry neosophist, i didn't explain properly, i putt it all back together, as per the Haynes and the gear liver wouldn't move at all, neither up nor down. So i stripped it back down and realised that the star wouldn't move. Should i just have another go at putting it back together?

Thanks for that link though that's much clearer than the haynes. :)

OK. Put every thing back as per that diagram.(much easier than trying to follow the haynes. Kicked it down into first held teh clutch in(cable ties) and this is what i got:

It won't fire because theres no petrol in the tank, i left the can at home, doh.

just saw the clutch video. It doesn't seem right to me.

I cannot put my finger on it but my first impression is that the pressure plate seems not to be putting any pressure on the plates at all.

Wouldn't the clutch slip all the while then?

He has the opposite problem where it doesn't disengage.

That does seems right for your gears now.. looks like it's in first allright :D

You often get some rear wheel drag but with the clutch in and the motor runnign you should be able to stop the back wheel without stalling the engine :)

Hello,

didn't manage to get upto the Bike till this morning. Once i had put some petrol in her she fired first time. Tried starting her in first with the clutch in, started but the back wheel started spinning, let the clutch out and it carnied on spinning at the same speed, pulled the clutch in and it still kept spinning???

Put it into neutral and the wheel stopped. Pulled the clutch in and put it into first, a little bit of a crunch but it went in and the back wheel started to spin again.

Bit confused now, does this mean that the clutch is now not engaging??

Any help appreciated

I said eariler you'll get some rear-wheel drag with the bike in first and the clutch in, this is drag on the clutch.

Keep the clutch pulled in (cable tie) or something and when its' running in first see if you can stop the back wheen spinning without the motor stalling.

Be careful you dont' get your hands broken off or something if you dry this, might be easier to try putting your foot on it etc.

If you can't stop it without stalling the bike your clutch still isn't working

use the back brake to stop the wheel....

think I've figured out the pictures that were worrying me/ When you pushed the pressure plate the clutch plates should have been able to move and you would see them jsut about relax as the spring pressure was taken off them.

The clutch is by default closed. Have you got a fiche? Have you got part 12 in the right way round?

Was it a total ballache to get the clutch nut on and tight, or was it very easy?

how many springs are you running?

Doesn't sound like a gearbox fault to me - it will be hard ot change gear if you cannot uncouple the gearbox from the engine..

Sorry Neosophist i forgot about trying to stop the back wheel, i will try that , have no Internet where the bike is so have to keep coming back and forth.

I'm not sure what a finch is?!

With part 12 are you referring to the washer with "this way out" on it (sorry i haven't got the Haynes here) if so i made sure that it was facing out. I have three springs in there, as per the manual but i do have some spare if needed

So also, need to get the clutch cover off again and see if the plates relax when the pressure plate is released?

E2A it was a royal ball ache to get the clutch nut done up to a point where i could stake it. Had to take all the plates out and rebuild a number of times and then it only just did up enough to stake it
