Starting issues

Post by Beemerboy »

Ok looks like my previous post disappeared .

My sons NC24 has always been a hard starter but is now not starting.
He's always used full choke and no throttle, and after swinging the starter
for about 5 or 6 tries at 10 seconds or so each, it would finally come to life.
Now it runs the battery down and still doesn't start.
What I have noticed is that if I give it a boost from another battery it fires up
immediately. This would point to battery, however I have swapped it out with my
GPz1100 battery and the problem remains.
What I also noticed today is that as soon as I flip the kill switch to "run" , the
dash lights dim. Now this makes my suspect that I have a partial short which is
pulling too much current from the battery and not enough for the plugs. This would
explain why a boost from another battery makes it run.
If anyone has experienced this or may be able to steer me in the right direction, it
would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Is it charging ok? The reg-rec fried on mine which fooked the CDI. Not sure why the idiot lights go dim, have you checked the loom along its length for any botch-jobs? Sounds like a bit of an electric gremlin that will only be resolved by a bit of detective work!

Yes charging is good, checked voltages etc. I did have to replace the RR shortly after
we got the bike. I spent some time looking it all over today, and electrically everything
appears correct. across the battery, I get 12,6V with ignition on, then when I flip
the "run" switch it drops to 12V. Had a look at the plugs, and although they are still new and
fire when out, they are CR9E whereas the manual says they should be C8EH-9. Can anyone
tell me if that plug is ok ?
I also took the trouble of pulling the carbs and balancing them with a feeler gage. The bike
runs a lot smoother and idles better too.
Pilot screws are 2 turns out as the manual suggests..is everyone happy with that ?

Some investigation has shown that the "CR" plugs have an internal
resistor . If the HT lead caps are also resistor caps, then I would
effectively have double the resistance per plug lead.
Logic tells me that this would cause spark suppression and
could cause my starting issues.
Does anyone agree with this or am I barking up the wrong tree ?
