not starting! need help
ok so i got a race bike project that im currently building. already got lots of help in the wanted section for bits that i needed, thanks to everyone that pmed me lol.
basicly i bought it already converted to a race bike, but it just wont start. the guy i bought it off says it was running not so long ago, but ive had no joy. so here is what ive done so far.....
first of all, whenever i turn the key and hit the start button, nothin happened at all. however after a while playing around with the multimeter i found that it was simply a broken wile coming from the start button itself. so now i hit the start button and it cranks over, but wont fire.
so i took out the tank and used another tank with gravity feed straight to the carbs with some fresh petrol and start spray (incase it was the pump), still not starting. but after a while of feeding the petrol in, the right hand side overflow pipe started to pour petrol, is this to be expected?
The spark plugs are new, but unfortunitly i dnt have a socket the right size atm to remove them. however ive took one of the leads off and pluged in a spare plug, put it against the frame. no spark
...... i assumed it was the kill switch that was dodgy, but it seems to be ok, all the wires and connections from the switch seem to have continuity right to the top of the coils.
thats all i have checked so far, ive no idea what to do next. really need some help.

Had a similar problem with my 3tj once, it wont fire with sidestand down, so i used to start it with stand up all the time or with clucth lever in. fixed now though had a broken wire leading to a multifunction relay next to the fusebox.

Re: not starting! need help
If your not getting a spark it could be the pickup coil has broken.
Had this broblem with my 3TJ last year. Fuel pump was working and all other systems checked out.
Put a meter across the pickup coil and make sure you are getting a reading of 80 to 120 ohm
follow the troubleshooting section in the Electrical Ignition section of the manual is a good start.

Re: not starting! need help
Ok
The petrol thing could be just that you connected the tank by gravity which caused the carbs to flood. Your bettter of trying to start the bike using carb cleaner down the air intakes and see if it fires.
But I think your problem is electrical atm.
Why didn't you get the seller to start the bike before you bought it ?
That maybe a harsh question

ive done alot of work to it since i last posted, suspension is sorted out, so it brakes, even converted it to use stick coils from a cbr600rr. it creates a much much stronger spark.
my problem now is that when i hit the starter, its only sparking once or twice???? just a couple of sparks, then nothing, no mater how long you hold in the button.
completely out of ideas as to what it could be now. anyone got any ideas?

Re: not starting! need help
could you borrow a set of original coils that are known to work and plug them in and see what happens?

Re: not starting! need help
I was trying to think it through last night but I'm not sure how the stick coils would affect the system.
If its only the coils that hold you back then do as Taggy says and just use standard type ones, at least until you get it running.
There's a take off on the crank by the starter motor that will fire magnetic points. Two wires (probably) go from there to the CDI and then from the CDI to the coils. I'm not sure exactly but the coils charge from one wire and then discharge when they get a signal. The two coils spark at Top and Bottom dead centers so theres a wasted spark. Your stick coils would (I imagine) only fire at Top dead so your new system is asking them to fir twice as often and they might not have enough time to recover so not generating enough to fire the plug.

Re: not starting! need help
my fault, i forgot to say,
i tried a good set of original coils and they were fireing the same as the stick coils are now....... accept the spark is just alot brighter. still have not got this sorted. Up side is that i now have a road going fzr to try the parts off. What part should i try swapping first?

The 400's coils have been found to be a lower power than the usual ones from a 600 etc
