NC24 Petrol tank leaking

Post by terryvxr8 » Sat Jul 03, 2010 2:59 pm

I was about to go out for a big ride today, and noticed paint bubbled up at the bottom of my petrol tank, and found petrol dripping out. After touching and removing the bubbling paint i found this;

To say im gutted just doesnt describe how i feel now. My nice orange paintwork is ruined and i cant go for a ride. :(

Anyway, has anyone repaired a tank before, as i was thinking a few spot welds and a grinder will fix it, or do you think it will now just spread and cause no end of trouble?.
Just been looking for a replacement tank and can only find nc21 tanks. Are they the same (size and fixings).
This bike was meant to be a cheap toy but its now starting to cost abit more than i wa expecting :x

NC21/24 are always a money pit.

Apart from different colours I believe the tanks are identical.

I know the frames are 100% identical which would say to me the moutings are the same.

I have seen a nc21 tank on a nc24 so im sure your correct, they are the same.

If i can get someone to weld it i have found a sealing kit to stop the petrol doing the same again but no body wants to weld petrol tanks :(

That'd be brazing.

You can do that, but judging by the size of the hole you might be better off cutting a new piece of sheet steel and butt welding it in.

Or even sourcing a new petrol tank.

Hi,
if you could get it clean enough you could dent the hole inwards a little and fill with lead solder using a big soldering iron if you've got one. i dunno how long it'd last tho, or how pretty it'd look, but as long as its petrol tight your bike would be running. As Neo said you prob be better off cutting the rust out and weling in some new bits, if you do that give the rest a good going over to make sure there no more surprises!!
Cheers
Ian

Im looking at 2 petrol tanks at the moment, just waiting for afew pics, so i can get one fitted and get the bike back on the road again.
I will then have plenty of time to get a small plate welded to my tank, then i have found a chemical sealing product that should stop it happening again.

I will then chemically seal the spare tank and keep it as a spare as they are getting rare now.

Im ordering a very similar product that chemically cleans then seals the inside of the tank. Im getting mine repaired in the next few weeks, but in the meantime, i have just bought a replacement tank thats white and has afew dents for £25 delivered  . It will do for a temp fix and when mine is all fixed and refitted i can then sell the white one on and might even seal that one aswell ;)
