vfr400 nc24 newbie!
hi guys.
just thouguth id introduce myself, i have an 88 E reg vfr 400, nc24.
bought it bout 5 years ago with the intention of doing my test, but hey, i bought a house and has taken me since then to get some spare cash together!
the bike has been stood in a garage since and im in the process of stripping it down and cleaning everything.
A couple of problems, are:
The collector box has rusted through where it meets the rear can.. Any suggestions??
last time it was started and ridden, the rev counter was idling at about 4000, and it reved very freely, but seemed to keep pulling well into the red, almost as if it had the wrong tachometer or the wrong scale??
How can i tell if it has the correct tacho? or is this just normal??
it just seemed to be comming alive then had to change gear...
Oh, and a really daft question, it didnt havea speedo cable, so ive ought a new one, but cant figuure our where the gearbox end ges... any suggestions???

4000 revs sounds too much. but they do rev freely and pull well up the revs. as for the collector box get someone to make one (Stainless steel would be good)as they are like hens teeth now.

david silver spares have 1 collector box in stock, its about £150, you wont be able to get one from honda or any dealers. Dont forgett the clamps and geskets

Get some pictures up.
If it's idling at 4000rpm turn the idle speed down
Correct idle is 1250rpm.
Spooky is correct, the other end of the speedo cable attaches to the speedo-drive which is on the left side of the front wheel, there should be a hook on the brake caliper to put the speedo cable through.
RCV4 on here makes a full stainless steel collectorbox with detachable rear pipes.
DSS have an NC24 box, awesome? They have some NC21's in stock but these are different and will require modding as the NC21 has a low-level exhaust.
The NC24 collectorbox is quite hard to come by now, been discontiniued a few years ago by Honda and they do rot quite badly... if you need to remove it you also have to take the engine out of the frame, which is a ballache.
Theres a company in New Zealand that were making mild steel copies, I believe somone on here brought one, they do fit too, if you can get one :)

Does anyone know how much the stainless collector box is and do you cut the rear pipes off and somehow connect to the stainless one or will it include new rear pipes?

So it is an engine out job to fit this. Is there any way of changing the collector box without taking the engine out as i am going to get one soon but havnt got the tools to get the engine out..
David silver do have one for the nc24 but only one so they can see how well it fits before they buy more in (i didnt want to be the tester though).

If youre doing a full strip down take loads of pics and poss do a progress thread on here, as im sure it will be of help to other members, aswell as being a good record for when you sell the bike in the future

I dont think its possible to get the NC24 rear pipes off the bike even if you could undo them in place. There is a way of getting the nuts off but you need an angle joint for your socket set and a spanner, you need to unbolt the shock adjuster as well.
Once that is done there isnt enough room to get the pipes out due to how close the engine is to the chassis i think.

it is possible to get the rear pipes off without removing the engine,you just chop them off the collector,the stainless collector and rear headers i make you can fit with engine in.

Detatchable ones :D
You can't fit the standard one without removing the engine.
