IS MY STARTER RELAY BROKE?

Post by graemenc24 » Sat Jun 19, 2010 10:31 pm

Hi all came back from a ride today on my 24 parked outside the garage turned bike off. Opened up garage went to start bike and i heard a click click noise. Then ignition light went off. A minute later the ignition light came back on so pressed start button and heard a single click again and ignition light went out. Tried the above four or five times and same result. Is it the unit where the main fuse is mounted on thats broken or something wrong with the ignition barrel?

Batterys dead.

Your reg/rec has probably died and the bike isn't charging the battery. (very common)

Re-charge the battery and test the charging system

Batt fine neophist and rr and stator checked them all out 12.61 volts on battery terminals and at the positive nut on the unit i suspect could be broke.

12.6 when the bikes running? Thats too low, it should charge between 13.2-14.4v. 12.6 at idle indicated a pretty fully battery though :-)

However, clicking / lights going off is usually a sign of a dead battery, mine did the same.

Do you have another battery to try just to isolate?

The starter relay could indeed be dead though. Try tapping it with a screwdriver handle (it's on the right hand side attached to the subframe) and then starting it, it might be stuck.

The starter motor is driven by the relay so if the motots sticking that could be another problem! :-)

guess what spoke to ian and he said try jumping it off the car and it worked. seems although my volt meter was showing decent voltage the ampage was not there. let it run for five mins and its fine now.. 14.9v when running at idle and 5000 rpm so rr is ok. it must have got to a critical stage of charge that just was not enough thanks neo sometimes i look beyond the obvious. batt only two months old looked at it in detail and as the bike leans over when on stand the far right cell was a little low on electrolyte so maybe that was why cheers again. some lad is meant to be buying it on monday will be sad to see her go :(

Has an aftermarket rr neo, eletrex r63 i think, they give out a bit more than the standard honda units i have been told. To clear up the meter reading of 12.61volts this was when the bike was not running as i could not start it because of the problem that i posted. cheers for your replys mate. Does ian daley the son of arthur post on here? he told me to try the car battery out first rather than look at relays cdi's and ignition barrels. He is always on the honda vfr forum..a lovely guy.

He posts on one of the VFR forums, i've seen his name a few times. Maybe Vsource or VFRworld..

I've got a couple of RR63's (one of them died on me after only about 3 months..)

14.9v is at the high end of the scale but its' just about within limits!

http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/pdfs/Tro ... G-&-RR.pdf

Electrexworld has their own fault-finding flow-chart there thats pretty good if you've never worked on motorocyle electrical systems before :)

yes used them to find out i had a bad earth from rr to battery very useful as long as you know the basics of a voltmeter. even cleaning all the earth contacts on bike makes the engine run smoother at low revs recomend to anyone doing that.

It was quite common on older Jap bikes to do 'earth upgrades' by runnign extra earths from the starter motor, coils etc, somebody on here now makes a kit. I think it's Rick-O maybe
