Painting questions

Post by spudhed » Wed Jul 09, 2008 11:35 am

hi guys, got my panels almost all prepped, but now have a few questions,

1. i know im supposed to rub it over with wet and dry before the paint goes on but what paper should i use (600?)

2. do i need to sand down the paint before the lacquer goes on

3. do the decals need to go on before lacquer or after or even between coats

and the final question is more of an opinion poll, ive already painted 2 spare panels attempting to choose a colour, one in satin black and one in fiat broom yellow, neither looked like i wanted them too, the yellow was too bright (wanted it more like number plate yellow, im splitting hairs i know but hey) and the satin black was too shiny for my liking and as usual came out nothing like the lid made me believe it would, but this said i think im gonna stick with what ive got or ill spend a fortune and an age trying different shades, so the question is which would you choose yellow and black decals or satin black and white/red decals?

Use 1200 paper for sanding. Sand paint before lacquer. You can put the decals on after paint and then lacquer; some people like to lacquer first then apply decals and re-lacquer- this allows them to remove improperly applied decals without damaging paint. I would go with yellow; black decals. Post up pics :D

Yellow is for poofter hippies to paint their VW beetles with flowers.

Yellow is for childrens anoraks.

Yellow is the color of baby poo.

Yellow is not a color for motorcycles, go satin black and then choose from every color other than yellow for the decals.

cheers guys, ill post pics eventually, if this crappy weather will let up so i can finish em. the only reason i faltered on the satin black was i wanted it to come out like the one in the pic stimpy posted above (damn i love that bike!) but mine came out looking a bit shiny. have to disagree with the anti yellow vibe though, my vfr was yellow/black hrc colours and it looked awesome, i considered a shocking orange and black too but i think that would be a bit much. also how does the satin black hold up against good ole uk weather, being unlacquered does it fade or need touching up (should i add an extra coat or two to make up for the lacquer?)

satin has a dull sheen to it...and is black...matt kinda looks abit grey
i think you can get it in a 2 pack...so it might not fade as much
