Thundercat emission control system

Post by nick » Fri Jun 04, 2010 2:01 pm

Right, before you all say - i know the 'cat isn't an FZR but as this forum contains a wealth of know-how on all things hybrid related, its the best place for me to ask.

Life has been throwing me some major curve balls of late, and i thought i would have to shelve my hybrid project due to money and time issues, hence the reason my 'cat engine is up for sale :(

But, i've been thrown a lifeline by my (ex) brother-in-law who has given me a late model import engine with next to no miles on it after he bought it as salvage.

I will be getting to the point in a minute...

So, after doing some surfing on 'tinternet i discover that this particular motor has an extra load of plumbing which is something to do with emissions. My question (finally!) is this - can i junk it all as the UK models never had it?

Here are the parts in question

Looks complicated ... throw it away !!! (don't throw to far just it case)

I'd use the carbs from your other engine though, I'd assume the ones from the emission control ones are retuned for that system

If it's a Swiss or Californian motor it might have crap (lower power) cams in it too.

Hi kayla,
it looks like an exhaust air valve type thing so it cleans up the exhaust emisions on the throtle (the fast moving exhaust gas draws in air and burns any unburnt fuel coming out the engine) but shuts the vavle off throtle to stop popping and backfiring on the over run.
If you still have the old carbs i'd try them like evil says and junk it all, just make sure you bung up any unused pipe connections so there airtight.
Cheers
Ian

Ta for all your words of wisdom

As far as i can tell by looking through the parts fiche sites on line, the jetting in the carbs appears to be the same as does the parts numbers for the cams.

If i whip of the rocker cover, will the cams have any id on them?

have a look here rather than take the cam cover off, these are all the year model t/cats for all eu countries with part numbers and diagrams might take half an hour to check all the part numbers of the cams but itll save having to take the cam cover off to check

Ta for that, use that site a lot!

found a T-cat forum and it would seem that its the Californian models that have different carb jetting but no mention of cams. No idea how i'm supposed to tell what model the engine came from, my bro-in-law doesn't know either

Can i cross reference the engine number with a list - assuming such a thing exists?

Yes there's an answer on Wiki about Yamaha engine numbers

1st character- Identifies the country in which the vehicle was manufactured.
For example: U.S.A.(1or 4), Canada(2), Mexico(3), Japan(J), Korea(K), England(S), Germany(W), Italy(Z)

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_i_deco ... vin_number - there's link there to which should give you basic info about the engine from the number.
