tyre fitment

Post by Hissing sid » Sun May 30, 2010 9:23 am

Morning fellow Veefers

My primary transport needs new hoops

She's a VFR750 1996 reg (nc30 is my weekend toy)

The rear tyre is a 170 width, the local tyre shop would have to order one in especially, however they have loads of 180 widths on the shelf, what would the implications of going to the wider tyre have?

more likely to get a sensible reply here than a vfr750 forum!!!!!!!!!
:rocks:

many thanks

Neil B

From what I remember the 90-93 bikes had a 5.5" rim (180 friendly.. 180/55...) but the 94-> bikes had a 5" rear wheel.

This isn't the best for a 180 tyre as there designed to go on a 5.5" rim.. if you can fit one onto the 5" rim the beads will be closer together which will deform the tyre into a more rounder shape (which could even put LESS rubber than a 170 onto the road)

I'm not aware of any manufacturers that approve a 180 on a 5" rim. (however there might be!)

I guess you could try it and see.. from what i remember it was always considered a bad idea on the 5" rims.. plus if you had an accident with the bike and the insurance were looking properly they'd notice that you had a non=approved tyre fitted which might buggar up any claim.

Personally i'd bite the bullet and go for the 170/60.. might be worth rining around see if anyone has one.

cheers

just what I need to know, 170 it'll be then

not in a great rush to get the tyres, so having to wait for the shop to order one in isn't a ball ache.

they offered me a choice of Brigestone bt02's0 or Avon Storm 2 Ultra AV56, which would be best for all year round commuting and weekend ride outs, probably 5k miles per annum?

off out for a blast on the NC30, back laters

Never used the Avon's before

The BT-020's are good though, you'll get between 8-12k's out of them :-)

My old man had a set on one of his bikes... good tyres.
