Speedo not working.

Post by Spoilt01 »

Hi Guys,

Im new to the website so sorry if iv posted this query on the wrong section?

Any way iv just become a owner of a VFR NC30 got her now 2 months and all is well.
But for some reason the speedo has stopped working, the rev counter works all well tho.
I washed the bike before and all was ok but I think I got a bit carried away the last time maybe a
bit of a leak? Im not sure where or how to check what the cause can be any advice?

Thanx.

Welcome!

NC30s have a cable driven speedo, so the first check would be make sure that it's fitted properly at both ends: One on the speedo which screws in, and one that bolts into the front sprocket cover. Hopefully it's just worked loose on the speedo end, but there is a plastic bit that can wear on the sprocket end.

as superlite said pal...
make sure the speedo is tight inside the housings... there isnt much than can go wrong with speedo's... so i'd go with that first. then...

1. detatch cable from sproket (undo screw and extract), attach drill to end of cable - drive it carefully and see if you get a reading - if you dont, then go step 2... if you do, then there's a problem with this connection OR the gear that drives the cable inside the housing.
2. detatch cable from speedo (undo shoulder and extract) - withdraw cable from sheath check for damage. if broken, fit new, if not go to step 3...
*3. remove speedo and take of back cover - there's a yellow gear at the back - spin it with your finger, check for reading... if you dont get a reading then there's something amiss with the gearing, never had this problem before, but would guess that its slipping, or something inside is shafted :S OR the cable wasn't properly fitted to the housing (common) check that you're screwing it in correctly... remember to insert the square end first, then secure and tighten with the threaded shoulder.

*note to check before step 3... if you take a small flat-head screwdriver, or drill bit, and insert it to the port where the cable attaches (speedo end) you can check that the housing gear/yellow gear union isnt worn...

my guess would be snapped cable though... its pretty common :) or poorly fitted cable - probably knocked it while cleaning.

hope this helps.
