Engine Rattle at LHS - video

To be honest it will probably not be for a few months I'm afraid, I just don't have the time for it atm.
If you think of anything specific you'd like me to check I'll do my best.

I'm pretty sure it's not the exhaust but I will double check, if it is that would be a big relief.

The rattle is loudest at tickover, gets quieter as the revs pick up and can't be heard above 2,500rpm.

Sounds like it's coming from within the LHS engine cover, or further within the engine, but definitely to the left side and definitely low down around crank height. So could be a crank bearing gone?

Exhaust header on cylinder 1 doesn't get hot at tickover, don't know if that's related. Has always had this problem though.

i've got this excat rattle.

Removed the clutch side end casing to find my oil pump chain is slack as ode' tits.

I've got a spare chain sitting downstairs so i may have to take a look at that... *just thinking i have to remove the clutch to get to that dont i *

Funny....I checked that chain and it was a bit slack, assumed this was normal...

Any update on this guys? I have just bought a 50K mile NC23 with an identical rattle!

Bike runs fine and the noise seems to go at higher revs but at tickover it's very obvious.

Any suggestiosn gratefully accepted before I start taking it to bits!

Had the starter motor out today and nothing obvious there. Could it be anything else that side of the engine?

Just had the right hand engine casing off. Haven't taken the clutch off yet (need to make or borrow a tool to hold it) but I can see the oil pump chain and there is some slack in there but nothing major. Does anyone know what sort of play you should have in this chain? Either way I can't see it making that much noise unless it was hanging off

I haven't found the cause of this yet - I ended up fitting a replacement engine. My poorly engine had probably about 15mm of slack in the oil pump chain; I compared this to my replacement engine and it was the same so nothing wrong there.

I did wonder if it was related to the starter motor since the engine did not rattle when being turned over on the button, although this could just be because it wasn't turning fast enough.

haven't checked this out yet but explained the problem to graeme France and he reckons it could be the starter clutch.

Remove the left hand engine casing to remove it and check the rivets holding it together, if there's movement these tend to rattle big time at low revs and then as it spins up the slack is taken up.

Will check it out over the weekend at let you know.
