Battery charging problems
Hi there.
I realize there are a whole load of threads on these issues and reading through them has been really useful, but I wanted a bit of advise about my particular symptoms so I though I would start my own....
I have an NC35 and I ran out of electricity recently, so it would seem that the bike is not charging the battery sufficiently. I don't think it helps that the light are alway on with the ignition but nonetheless.
I've been through the Electro sport flow chart with my mulitmeter. The battery connection reading were okay, as were the impedence measurement on the generator output, however the voltage out on the generator is on the low side: 42V on each wire rather than the 50 stated. The electro port flowchart consequently says "Stator is at fault, replace"
However I am little skeptical as all the wires read 42V rather than one, and the Haynes manual suggests that if the impedence measurements are ok, then the windings must be in good condition.
Has anyone got any thoughts before I go out and buy a rotor extractor in order to inspect the stator windings?
One thing I did notice is that one of the connectors on the Reg plug has some burn evidence, however I believe the Reg/Rec has been replaced at some point in the past so this may not a recent thing...

had a similar issue with charging the plug on mine already had the 3 yellows bypassed noticed burning in plug at red/white wire connection . cut plug out and soldered wires onto good bullet connectors problem solved . that plug looks as bad as mine was may well be the cause.

Fix that plug and try again, the 3-phase system on these bikes require all the cores to have good connections or the alternator output will be impaired.

Hi, my nc30 was only reading about 40 volts per phase and now charges fine thanks to a R6 reg/rec. fit a new spade connector to any burnt ones, and solder them on rather than crimp, then try it again, if its still low get another reg.

Hmm you just copied my idea for my next thread! I have the same syptoms! dead batteries 42v out of all 3 combinations of yellow wires and all resistance tests coming in as spec. inspected windings, all looks healthy...
Im trying to source a r6 reg as we (digitally) speak. This is 'cause the resistances on the r/r that read from yellow to yellow pins is either infinite or zero i cant remember... (out of spec). i have original r/r on a 60000km bike...
(By the way use a 30mm+ m20 1.5mm pitch bolt. cheaper than a puller.)

Thanks for the hints everyone, it sounds like the generator may be a red herring... I will replace the burned connector with spades and re do the tests.
Harvd - I think I will look for an R6 Reg as well to be on the safe side; going to be away for a few days so If you get any further in the meantime let me know!

Firstly.. check your battery.. an old battery won't take charge well and the reg/rec will have to burn off the excess charge as heat.. this often manifests itself as the plug.
Secondly.. these connectors can get filled with crap.. if they do they'll burn as well theres high ampage running through them.. oxidisation etc also cause this.

My plug looked exactly like yours and I had the same symptoms. I replaced the plug with new soldered spade connectors with heat shrink tube around them and plugged them straight into the reg/rec. Problem solved.
