Charging Issue
Iv been having a bit of ball ache with the 35 of late with a charging issue. It will seen fine if i go out somewhere, but then lose voltage so wont start, all it will do is click on the starter until i put the battery on charge, after which it will fire up without a problem. It was used for a year without problem and nothing was changed since the problem was started.
Searched on the forum and found the electric troubleshooting guide so went through and got normal results for the tests but found dirt in the connector from the generator and reg/rec so put it down to that, but the problem was still the same. Iv repeated the test and got fine for the leakage test, but on the battery holding test the voltage dropped to 12.1v (as opposed to 12.3v on the guide). However i had the battery tested by my local bike shop and they said it was fine. Also on the charging system test when holding it at 25/3krpm the voltage only reads 12.8-13.1v which is too low, however when doing the further tests on the reg/rec I get .43v which is fine, as is the gen stator.
Unfortunately atm i cant throw money at the problem so im trying to fix the problem myself without buying anything not needed. Any help will be much appreciated.

Edit, also forgot to mention when i was out testing to see if it would work whenever i was stopped at some lights for example if i blipped the throttle it would try and die on me.

battery when charged, bike off =?
voltage when the bike is at 5k revs - across the battery =?
the same with lights on = ?
have you checked the output of the genny?
the resistance?
Sounds like a duff battery to me if it is 12.1 v sitting there..too low IMO

Cheers for the reply, ill get the measurements in the morning since iv got it off. One thing is though i cant turn my lights off, they are always on.

Hi wallie, I just bought a Varta AGM Fun Start battery (£31 inc p&p ebay) for my NC29, if you can afford it and they have an equivelent type for your NC35 that is the battery to go for, I have had issues on and off despite having a new MF battery last year. Since buying this Varta battery I have had a very noticable change in starting the bike, its now a pleasure and not a will it-wont it fire up sort of day I sometimes got recently.

Right some numbers:
Battery charged and bike off - 13.7v
Voltage @5k - 11.9v
For some reason wasn't able to get any numbers from the genny, think i wasn't doing that right lol.

no charge coming from the genny
Genny is checked using AC Voltage - you prob the genny side of the plugs..should get approx 50V AC in each phase.
The bottom line is that your bike is not charging the battery...

Right just to check to find the voltage of the genny earth the negative then take the reading from the 3 yellow wired connector?
I just tried again with the engine running and the only reading i could get was 0.03 volts lol.

Set your multimeter to measure AC volts, not DC. DC will probably show you nothing.
Also just getting a voltage doesn't mean it can provide power. Its best to connect a small 12V bulb to the generator. like an indicator bulb.
Semi Recently my bike stopped charging for the simple reason that the connectors had oxidized a bit. Just sprayed contact cleaner on them and plugged/unplugged them 50x, good as new.

take your reading in the connector - you get a+b, b+c and a+c - of the three wires.
do AC volts and also resistance
AC should be approx 50v AC (at 5k revs)
Any resistance means you might be looking at a fried genny....
@Lope - genny is an AC supply. A 12V lamp takes a DC supply - won't work mate

CMSMJ1: A 12V light bulb will run on 12V AC or DC. They're equivalent in terms of power. Only something polarized like an LED needs DC.
(The generator will only make 50V AC with no load)
