NC30 wheel removal advice

Post by SimNC30 »

I need to get my wheels powdercoated because the red is particularly faded and i've just noticed that there is a little bit of exposed metal on the front wheel where the paint has flaked off. I'm wondering though, what's the best way to go about it? I currently don't have a paddock stand, and I'm not sure if I've got a socket (correct me if I'm, wrong) large enough to remove the rear wheel nut so want to know if it's worth me taking the bike to my local mechanic and asking him to remove the wheels, discs and tyres so I can get the wheels done? Or, supposing I could do it at home, can I get away with having the bike on a paddock stand and supporting the bottoms of the forks with pieces of wood?

Also, I'm reluctant to use the bike at the moment because of the exposed metal (sligtly smaller than a 5p), but I need to go somewhere on it at the weekend. Aside from it getting wet and generally being exposed to the air, how advisable is this (or rather, can I get away with it?)?

just touch it in with some touch up paint until you can get the wheels off. If you left it, it wouldnt be the end of the world as the alloy in the wheels will take a good deal of time to oxidise and corrode.

You need a 24mm socket for the front axle bolt and a 36mm for the rear wheel nut. I have a rear paddock stand that I use but use a trolley jack under the front exhaust (with a piece of wood to protect them). It is quite safe and Ive have the whole front end off for the last 4 months using this method.
