got the nc30 and the project starts...

Post by Landy63 »

Finally got the bike thanks to mick, and got around to stripping it down all day today. On first inspections the old girl appears to be a good un, However i found a few faults that i need to sort before anything else can begin. firstly the rear shock is either set up for the heaviest man in nato or its shagged and im voting for the latter. secondly one of the ht leads snapped in half in my hand while checking the plugs lol luckilly i bought one off ebay last week and it arrived this morning :) . next surprise was when i removed the radiators only to find that it only had about half a pint of coolant in so im unsure if this might have caused any damage to the engine if it has been run like this? then was the engine oil which due to the age and state of the stuff could probably be sent back to esso and once they'd removed the dinosaur fossils could probably refine it back into fuel :( . oh and then i realised that the fuel valve assembley was missing from the tank lol the rads also have seen better days sadly and im thinking about ordering some of the ones off jap4performance as there shinney and apparently offer 40% extra cooling. On a brighter note i removed the front forks and the bearings and ancills are like brand new!! no sign of pitting or damage to the the rollers or the guides!! also every bolt and nut ive checked hasnt been cross threaded or damaged so it will make putting it back together much easier. Either way im really chuffed to finally have the thing and pretty soon ill have some pics posted with some progress and my lovely new lcd dash fitted...
Thanks for reading and thanks again mick for your patience and quality advise.
Cheers
Damien

Rite, day 2 of the strip down.....
Today i started where i left off yesterday, ive removed the engine, rear wheel, disk, sproket, chain, shagged shock and swingarm. during all this i noticed some interesting things.. firstly who ever had the bike before mick had obviously loved this bike at some point and had spent a few quid on bits and bobs. unfortuately he must have also neglected the little things like torque'in up the engine mounts :o They varied from hand tight to incredible hulk tight, which was a rite laugh when i came to taking them out :( also on closer inspection it would appear the bike has suffered from catastrophic chain failure at some point as there are 3cm deep gouges in the swingarm and aslo the front sproket cover!! as a result im wondering wheather i should replace the swingarm as it will take alot of effort to fill it. also whilst on the subject i cant get the bearing holder out of the swingarm its proper jammed in!! :( And now that rear shock is out im inclinded to think it is after all beyond saving :( I always like to finish on a positive note so erm.... oh the rear sproket was in decent condition :) tomorrow im gonna seperate the swingarm from the frame and start to prioritise parts for replacing and for powder coating.
cheers for reading
Damien
