Valve clearnences
I've decided im going to do the clearences as i can't ride it until april anyway, so may aswell.
Anyway, i read about it in the Haynes manual. It mentioned the shims. Now i've only ever done clearences on engines with rockers.
So, these shims. I'm pretty sure i basically get it. The only question i have is....
Can these shims be bought at any car parts shop or are they specific to the cbr400???

So they're honda specific?
Only reason i ask is because my nearest honda dealer is ages away so if any old bike shop would stock them that would be great.
Wonder if DK motorcycles would....???
Yeah i'll take plenty of pics and keep you updated. I also have the specific pages from the haynes manual for checking and adjusting the clearences if you want me to send them to you???
Or i could just send you the whole haynes manual lol.

They are generic shims...you should have no worries getting some.

Re: Valve clearnences
Hey,
Thanks!
I really appreciate the offer of the Haynes manual that's really kind, I actually have the manual at home already (by home I mean my parents house) I'm at University at the moment, so I wont be doing it myself for a while yet. I have a rough idea of what is involved, but what I am most scared about is torqueing the camshafts back on (if that's right? if that doesn't need doing then I don't know what I am scared of....)
I have a VW Golf and I got let down severely by my dads torque wrench, I trusted a mechanic 'friend' to torque the cylinder head back on for me when we changed the headgasket, anyway, he was saying 'Im sure this is far to tight but the wrench hasn't clicked yet do you want me to keep going?' My response was 'you are the mechanic who has done this many times before, you do what you think is best' Anyway, he overtightened it and stripped the thread in the block...
About £100 worth of one use parts (head gasket, headbolts, sump gasket, cam seals, cam belt, water pump etc) were then instantly wasted, although it was the last bolt he did up and the engine is running ok and hasn't leaked oil/coolant yet... anyway fingers crossed
Thanks!

With a torque wrench make sure you return it to 0 after every time you use it, otherwise the spring inside the torque wrench will stretch.
You could have heli-coiled that block.

Re: Valve clearnences
yea but helicoiling the block would result in scrapping the £40 worth of new head bolts and head gasket and various other things I think, for now it hasn't leaked yet, so in a few years I'll readdress the problem (or one day gti or VR6 it) but cars suck compared to bikes I've decided anyway!

What reg golf is it mate?
I'm a huge fan of the old skool cars (MK1 and 2 golfs, MK1 festa's, Vee Dub polo's MK1, classic mini's etc etc).
Yeah cars are pretty lame compared with bikes but in this weather i know what i'd rather use..
