Yamaha caliper adapters
Hey CBR section, thought i would post up my new mini project and also find some help with a few things that i know dout will need help with. Im looking to make up some adapter plates to fit Yamaha 4 piston blue spot calipers(come on loads of different Yams) to my nc29. I wouldn't normally be to fast to fit dirty Yam parts to my beautiful Honda but a mate had them lying spare as they were seized and im looking for something to keep me busy in the garage after finishing the cbr6 fairing conversion.
Just in case anyone is unsure what calipers im on about see the pic an also the big below :D

The one thing im missing to even start this project is brake pads for the calipers, i have placed the calipers up to the bike and the mounting points are in a suitable position for making brackets up, so if anyone has any used brake pads they are about to bin il take them off your hands. (this is only to make sure the calipers are in the rite position, il be buying new ones before i run them lol)
Note: Before i even thought about doing this i thought what alot of people will be thinking and will no doubt post up (why, when the original brakes are fine and or better) I could give a long winded answer to that question but in short, i want to see for myself what performance gains there are to be had with the 4 pots if any over the 2 pot sliding doodaa's
Oh if anyone fancys them selfs as a Yamaha guru feel free to post up i have some questions to ask.

Re: Yamaha caliper adapters
Had a wee look at the calipers today, im still a bit stuck without brake pads but iv got a start anyway. This isnt the final design but i cant see it being far of. there is a difference in the depth around 1cm from the caliper to the original mounting points. As for making them there is a few option im weighing up , either getting them machines from a block and machining out the 1cm dept difference- this would probably be the strongest and best looking option but also the most expensive. the cheapest option is Trying to make them as simple as possible so will no doubt be basic plate alloy with spacers welded to take up the gap.

Pretty basic design, I really need brake pads before i can get them finalized in CAD.

Re: Yamaha caliper adapters
I used to have Tokiko 4 pots on my NC29 road bike and TBH the rebuilt standard ones on my NC29 trackbike were far better.
but if its bling factor you are after and dont mind a considerable amount more of unsprung weight go for it.

Re: Yamaha caliper adapters
I nearly put the Tokico's on but didn't have the cash when sqsuperbikes was selling the brackets a wile back. Iv heard the storys about the standards being just as good ect and i have no dout that they are as i recently rebuild mine and they are plenty good but iv also rode few Yamaha's running these calipers and like the feel i got from, this could be down to the bike;fork set up ect; but the only way to find out is to strap them on and see i think. Il be running the Yamaha master cylinder aswel. Im a strong believer in function over form (althought my bike would say otherwise :D ) If i was in it for the looks id have gone for radials.
Just off hand if you know, what was the weight difference between the standard and the Tokico's? I will weigh Yamaha calipers to see.
Iv not got round to making the adapters yet as i said before my lack of brake pads was stopping me getting the calipers in the exact position they need to be. Being a bit skint at the moment spending £30 on brake pads for calipers that at the moment dont work seems like a bit of a waste, so i did the next best thing and made myself some. Yes is it a bit "ghetto" but they do the job that i need them to just now and iv learned that the Yamaha pads are about 3mm shorter than the cbr ones but also about 2mm wider, this makes the placement of them crucial as they are alot closer to the edges of the disc than the cbr pads.

Anyone fancy trying these out
Hopfully i should get round to making the adapters out of wood or plastic tomoro, to get measurements of.

Re: Yamaha caliper adapters
Another daily update it looks like. I made up the adapters out of plastic as its alot faster to work with than metal at this stage. Iv got all the measurements i need now to get the holes in the rite position but still havnt decided on the final shape as you can see just now they have alot of useless material.
Getting the caliper in the correct position was a pain in the arse the wider pads mean the caliper has to be in the center other wise it runs of the disc. I ended up making 3 proto types before settling with the one in the pic but even they arnt perfect and will probably go thought a couple more before im happy with were the caliper is sitting. Also got the depth distance sorted out and was less than i thought, around 6.5mm.

Oh, a little note on weight, after what monkey said about unsprung weight i had to weigh them and see, turns out that they are 925 grams approx (without pads). I havnt weighed the stock without pads as the caliper pin covering cap has decided to not come out, but with pads they come to 1200grams approx. I will see about getting the pads out tomoro but i cant see the Yamaha calipers being much, if any, heavier
