Getting annoyed with NC30 that's not starting.

My NC30 had some problems with a sticky valve a little while ago.

It's been sitting for a while and now won't start. There was a thread a little further down relating to battery.

After charging, it's now reading a bit over 13volts and doesn't drop too much when I try to start her up.

I'm not experianced with diagnosing/solving motoring problems. A list of what people think it could be would be a great help on the way to solving it. I'll tell you what I know so far.

The battery has a charge, and is holding it.
The bike ticks over.
It sounds like one of the cylinders starts to go, but just cuts out straight away.
I have had the fuel tank off, but have put it back exactly as it was.
I have changed the air filter to a new one.


I know there could be a load of things wrong meaning its not starting, but just some ideas that I can look at would be a great help.

Hiya,
I'd start by making sure the vacume hose from the carb to the fuel switch is on ok and not split, and if thats ok, then mabe clean the sparkplugs, as there real small and get 'wet' and wont spark really easily. Take them out and put the electrodes in a flame from a blow torch (or a cooker if theres no females watching)......

The vacuum hose seems fairly lose, but is on, could this be the problem if its not a tight fit? As I assume the whole point of the vacuum hose is to give a vacuum and obviously being lose would be a problem?

Have you got the vacuume hose in the right position on the tap,it's a mistake a lot of people make.

your vacuume hose should be a snug fit it has to be able to open the valve in the tap,
did you get the valve fixed ?

If it's been sitting the 2 most likely problems will be.

Clogged / Dirty Carbs
Stale Fuel

Repeatadly trying to start a bike with stale fuel / gummed up carbs can kill off the plugs too :/

My lawnmower had been sitting a couple of months and I couldn't get it to start up over the weekend. New fuel and it was fine :-)

Fuel is new.
Carbs should be ok because it hasn't been standing that long that i'd expect them to have clogged.

Vacuum hose. Anyone got a picture of where it is meant to go?

vac hose goes from no 3 cylinder (right rear as you sit on bike) and goes to the little spigot on the fuel tap that points forward, going in the same direction as the main fuel line, thats how it is on my bike.

I've been looking at this over and over.
My vacuum hose nipple thing sticks down, whereas everyone else's in pictures/haynes manual/everywhere point forward (same way as fuel line and mine is at 90 degrees to it) different model tap?

Regardless, from what I can see, it is all connected and still not starting.

My vacuum hose also points down...so no worries there.

Have you got a good vacuum when turning the bike over? Can you get the fuel to flow if you use another hose to open the tap?

Is your tank not full of crap and blocking the outlets?

You need to get into it and it will become very obvious what the problem is.
