Dead NC29 - views on putting in 600 engine?
Hi everyone
Last autumn I managed to kill off my lovely babyblade on the way back from the bol d'or. Bits of piston in the gear box, smoke everywhere - not good!!
Having had a look about, decided to rebuild engine (not me personally) until I found out the cost of new pistons £600! without the engineering costs of the head etc. Apparently dropping a valve is common in these bikes so reluctant to buy another 2nd had one.
So - now thinking about putting a 600 in - with a little tweaking. Has anyone done this? I understand that as long as I get the equivalent model year 600 engine it should work?
Been without wheels far too long now and need to get it sorted.

£600 seems a bit excessive, there's a post in the Technical section I think, talking about a group buy on aftermarket +1mm pistons and rings for around £400 dependant on the amount of people interested. That might be worth a look, if your engine is beyond repair you could source a good cheap runner and bore it out. You could even look into a 440cc big bore kit, that might even be cheaper. The 600 engine doesnt slip into the 29 as easily as the 23 from what I'm led to believe, and yet again you'll have to buy an unknown secondhand engine.
Good luck whatever you do, keep us posted.

Thanks for the pointer on the technical forum. The pistons for my blokes busa were cheaper than the 400!!!!, don't want any rubbish though.
I will let you know how I get on - gutted tho - my first big bike and I love it!!

But do you really want a 600cc engine? Don't you love your NC29 for what it is/was?
I heard GF sells rebuilt engines for around the £300-£400 mark, that's what I'd do.

Re: Dead NC29 - views on putting in 600 engine?
We do standard used road engines fully serviced i.e. fresh clutch - valve clearances set - sump off - oil pump pick up cleaned - engine comprehensively cleaned - from £350
Full race engines from £2200
Plus I also have in stock a brand new TTS 440 cc NC29 kit all pre assembled with balanced con rods and machined crankcases - £650
This comprises - the new TTS supplied pistons assemblies fitted to lightened / balanced con rods - plus the rebored crankcases.
I will sell the new 440cc TTS supplied pistons separately if interested - as they are the same for the Tri Arm / NC30 / NC35 - for £400
Food for thought ...
