How to rebuild a bike

Post by dickdastardly »

Hope I havn't tricked you all into thinking I was going to post instructions on how to rebuild a bike. Anyway, I need some help. I'm planning on rebuilding the whole of my bike this winter. I have tools available and time (and a few eager buddies) so I thought I may aswell. I've rebuilt a grand total of 2 engines and done bits and bobs to bikes before. So I'm no guru (I do have a few people in the know but they're busy people). What I really want is a shopping list from you guys. What will I need (from gaskets to oil) or what would anyone recommend to add or take away. Things like some nice stainless bolts, just the little things. Would be really helpful.

I have a few mods already, CBR6 shock, uprated fork internals and VFR calipers and a Tyga kit.
It really just needs a top end rebuild but I'd like to gain the experience and have a lovely tidy bike (it's all abit bodged atm) for the summer. Along side the rebuild I want to powder coat my wheels, fork bottoms and frame. Get my fairings sprayed (they're still just primed). Another major thing that any advice on would be hugely appreciated is gas flowing/porting (whatever) and the whole RVF piston conversion thingo. Thought I'd ask you guys first before bothering my "people in the know".

Last but not least, does anyone have some stainless or ally downpipes knocking about? Don't really mind if the not for the road.

Hi

So is the bike already in bits? Im just in the process of refreshing my trackbike at the moment, so the bikes stripped down with the engine out. Im planning on just getting the basic things sorted, like valve clearances, carb balancing and a full service.
Put a few pics up so we can all have a look, as it sounds like you have a very nice bike in the making there.
Good luck.

Are there any problem with engine? What is the purpose to rebuild engine - just drive in couple of alloy bolts ?

The bikes an NC23 Tri-Arm. Not in bits yet, gonna wait till I'm back at uni. PARUS: The main reason was to get the basics sorted like chrisja2 said. But I'd like to squeeze a little more power out of it if I could, make sure everything is in good knick and really it's just to gain experience. I find it fun too. My carbs are balanced but need rejetting quite bad. I wont go with ally bolts, I think they're too soft. Thanks for the link jack. I've been on the pro-bolt site before. Was wondering if anyone new anything that wasn't so pricey. But then I know Pro-Bolt are really reliable.

I forgot to mention, about the downpipes (if anyone has some they want rid of), they have to fit a bolt on can (three bolts in the standard place), got one of those Beowulf cans.

This is pretty much the bike at the moment, but it's ridable. http://www.400greybike.info/newforum/vi ... &sk=t&sd=a" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Probably wont have any pics up for a while, wanna do most of the work first.

Anyone know where I can get some good bearings other than DSS?

If yours is a K model, may I ask what jets you currently have and what you plan to change to?

It's a J, but I don't know what jets I have in at the moment. I've only had the carbs off once and didn't bother to look then as I didn't really have a clue what I was looking for. Bit more clued up now though (I hope). Any particular reason you want to know? Should have the carbs off in Jan at some point.

Just some more of my plans, I want to make it abit more user friendly. Gonna fit an alarm I have. Got this idea of modifying my left wing mirror to take a sat nav and have it hard wired in (but the sat nav is still gonna be removable). My mirror came off months ago (caught it on my jacket as I walked past) and I haven't replaced it.

I'm just in the process of stripping and rebuilding a nc23 to use on the track. I'm down to the frame, forks, front wheel and swingin arm everything else is off and in process of cleaning. I'm hoping to have it sprayed up in rothman honda colours like Eddie Lawson's nsr 500 from 1989. A couple of things I find very useful when strippin and rebuilding a bike is a digital camera and some tubs for putting bolts and stuff in.
