Oil cooler help for NC30
Hi all
Im intersted in fitting a oil cooler to my jap spec nc30, I understand that the uk model had one fitted, but I cant find any illustrations on where and how it would be fixed to the bike. I have found some threads on oil coolers but nothing specific with the info Im looking for.
I want to keep the fan and I have Rick O's rads top and bottom, the bike is going to be used for road and track and I would like to fit a standard cooler or failing that a aftermarket one. I have read that the oil pump was uprated on the uk bike and the oil was routed from the engine sump, but if the cooler wasnt very big I would think that the jap oil pump should be ok.
So has anyone uprated there jap spec bike with a standard or aftermarket oil cooler, keeping the fan?
Has anyone got any illustrations on how and where this is fitted to a uk bike and/or a modded bike?

You need a UKspec oil pump (or allegedly an NC24 one) and you also need to drill the blanks in your crankcases to accept the UK oil lines.
If you can get all the gear then I reckon it should not be an enormous ballache.
The UK cooler was fitted under the nose.
If you have Rick O rads, a fan and don't ride slowly in 35 deg C heat then I doubt you'll really need the oil cooler.

Yes Im uk based, will there be provision on my spec bike for the cooler to attach to, or is it on a specific piece of equip i need to get.
I have seen a sandwich plate (Motec or something i think) that takes of a feed just before the filter, do you think the standard pump would cope with that ? as long as it didnt mean losing the fan though.

I use the Mocal oil cooler on my jap bike. I use a stubby filter and have not used a fan for years. To fit one of these is easy.
To retrofit the UK cooling gubbins ot the jap block is a pretty intensive bit of engineering. There is a chap on here that has done it...cannot recall the name but it will come.
You need the UK pump (rare) and also the drill the block (sketchy) and then the UK pipes and rad (easy)
The Mocal stuff bolts on and you need to get your fittings and hoses and a rad then all is peachy.
If I ran a fan and Rick O rads I'd sack the oil cooler...

It was me that fitted an oil cooler to an import motor,the motor was stripped at the time so it
was easy to do,you will need the uk model pump,you also have to drill the casting below the front exhausts for the oil pickup pipes,which means swarf in the motor,which in turn means you
will have to remove the sump before you drill,so unless your motor is stripped go the Mocal route.

I think there might be room for the fan if you use the short filter.

That is what I use Lange..
I use an FZ6 o/e Yamaha filter too..but it is freezing so I'm not going to the garage to measure it...

Thanks lange, CMSMJ1, that looks just what im looking for for the time being. Is that a Mocal sandwich plate?
and are you running a standard jap spec oil pump with that cooler?
i have heard others say you need an uprated pump but if i use a slim nc24 cooler i cant see there being any adverse problems with circulation !
I would be interested to see if the Yam filter still allows me to keep fan when it warms up CMSMJ1
