Chain & Sprockets

Don't flame me please, I did do a search but didn't find what I was looking for.

My chain has some tight spots so I'm coming up for a change, I think its the original sprockets on it anyway, done about 17,000 odd thousand now. Hmm maybe not, anyway they are old.

I have a gold chain at the minute and would obviously like to keep it to a gold chain. I have heard you can get some gold talon sprockets too? Is it both front and rear sprockets that come in gold? I wouldn't mind a gold front one, I think it would look pretty smart with no front sprocket cover, not to mention easier to clean and lube.

Where can I get them from? Chain included?

I am running 33 bhp at the minute, I'm guessing I have standard tooth ones at the minute, (its too cold to go and check).

Would any of you recommend maybe going down a tooth on the front? How much will it knock out the speedo?

Also I read some where about lubing with gearbox oil? Rather than chain lube, if not can you recommend a lube that doesn't make my white wheel all shitty?

Pointless putting a gold front on, you can't run without the cover, not sure if it's needed for MOT purposes, but the speedo takes the drive from the cover anyway. No cover no speedo.

I always use Renthal and they do a gold.

As regards gearing I have 14, one less, on the front and 43, three more, on the rear. This is my preferred set up, but everyone will have different opinions. Plenty of acceleration but loses on the top end.

I have a spreadsheet somewhere with the gearing on to work out your speed. Someone posted it on here and I saved it.

Renthal here too, hard anodised +2 rear with stock front. Seems to work quite well for me as a good compromise.

Wurth's chain wax always gets rave reviews. I couldnt find any last time my chain wax ran out so I bought the cheapest chain wax at the shop. It paints the wheel fucked up :)

'they' say if you spray it on when the chain is hot (after a ride) and leave it to cool it will be absorbed and it will stick and less will fly off or some crap. Empirical science suggests this is bollocks. It may lube the chain better, but flies off all the same.

I tried cleaning my rim with petrol last time. Never again. After getting a headache and losing many brain cells, it still wasn't quite clean. Will try a hand degreaser next time.
I had a idea to build a chain cover to prevent the chain flicking crap onto the wheel. That would be awesome.

profi dry lube cant spell but available at hein gericke
