[NC30] New chain + sprockets + suspension question

Post by iDemonix » Sat Jun 01, 2013 11:44 am

Hi all,

The chain on my NC30 has seen better days and due to the lay up over winter it's developed some good surface rust on the inside.

Never bought C+S before, where's the best place and what kind of price is it? I was thinking about dropping a tooth on the front to improve acceleration - how much will this hamper my top end? Does it also mean I need to add a tooth to the back? I've heard a few people mention that changing sprocket size means the same links see the same spikes on the sprocket, which is a bad thing, would loosening the chain completely off every 2-3k miles and moving it round a link help?

I've not got a chain riveting tool and tbh it's sofa king important and dangerous I'll find a professional to do the chain.

Fair few questions there, any help appreciated. On to the suspension...

The lowest point on the suspension linkage (dogbone?) has a knackered bushing, very nearly failed the MOT on it. Where would I find the correct size bushing and what's the easiest way to replace it? I recently did a massive overhaul of new swingarm, new shock (BMW S1000RR) new engine and new exhaust, I'll be damned if I'm taking it to bits again... Must be an easy way? I only have a rear paddock stand, should really invest in an abba soon...

Ive never heard about the same links seeing the same tooth on the sprocket theory you mention but no you dont have to add a tooth to the back if you drop one on the front. For reference -1 tooth on the front roughly works out about +3 teeth on the back.
I always get my C+S from rick, just tell him the sprockets i want and he supplies a chain the right length. Personally i find -1 a bit much on the road, its fine if all you do is blast about A roads and back roads but your soon find it a pain if you do any motorway miles, i find +2 on the rear a good compromise.
Buy a decent chain tool which will cost around the same as getting a garage to do the work and its not a hard job and then next time you have to replace one its free

No idea where you'd get bushes from but you will defiantly need a hydraulic press to remove and fit them, again send it to rick o and he'll replace the shit bushes with bearings. Oh and you wont do it on a paddock stand as you need to take the load off the suspension, time to get a abba stand im afraid.

Cheers for the advice. Think I'll consider +1 or +2 on the rear.

Nervous about doing the chain myself, would be disastrous if it failed at high speed... That's annoying about the rear bushing as that will take some time :/ So I'd need to put the bike on an abba stand, then I could drop out the entire triangle and ship it off? Any idea how much that'd cost?

Drop rick an email, he might even have it listed on his pricelist. He might even do it on an exchange basis so if you ask nicely its a possibility he might send you one and you then send him yours once you've swapped it over, failing that im sure someone will have one knocking about from a rvf conversion you could buy and then send that to him. Your still gunna need a abba stand or get creative and find a way of supporting the bike on axle stands or something.

Is that the full triangle? Is it bushes or needle rollers?

Spoke to Rick, what I might do (once I acquire an abba) is drop the triangle out and replace it straightaway so the bike isn't off the road. Then I'll send the old one off to Rick for an upgrade to needle rollers and wait until the one on the bike wears out.

Does anyone here have a standard rear and +1 on the front?
A good point that Rick O points out is that if I go +1 on the front, I can swap back to the old sprocket if I want without changing the chain. But if +1 on the front is too much, I'll go +2 on the back as I'm swapping the chain anyway.

Full triangle, bushes I think as it's a standard NC30 one.

Do you have the dogbone too? As I'm not sure which is at fault, although pretty sure it's the triangle linkage. How much you after?

Yeah got the dogbone too, I'll have to fish it all out the loft I think.
