Front Brake Issue

Post by pf85 » Sat Oct 16, 2010 4:51 pm

Hi,

I've noticed lately theres a knock coming from the front when I drive over bumpy roads and when I looked a bit closer I seen the bolt which connects the front left brake calliper to the fork (from sitting on bike) looked a bit loose. There was a small gap and I could move it with my hand. Trouble is the bolt's head is out of shape and I cannot move it easily.

Ive attached a couple of pics to give you a better idea of what im talking about. Should this space be there? What type of bolt should be used? The bolt on the other side is different.. :sshh:

That gap should be there but the bolt shouldn't be loose. The outer part of the bracket is just a collar for the head of the bolt. The bolt is a normal socket screw M8 x (IIRC) 25mm length.

What is with the bottom bolt.. it should be a smaller allen-bolt.. looks like somebody has been bodging things.

It pivots on there, you can undo the lower allen bolt (normal bolt) in your case and swing it up.. as long as there is no side-play it should be ok.

Maybe your knock is elsewhere..

Are you sure the knock isn't bearing related?

That bolt looks knacked, you'll probably want to replace it but obviously need to get it out first. Screw extractor should do it :-)

:plus: Check out the front guard and if you can move it easily with your hand, stick a layer of electrical tape around the inside of the holder and jobs a gooden' :peace:

I checked the front guard and its secure and doesnt rattle.

I think the front bearings need changed as there is a slight groan at times but would this cause a knocking noise when going over bumps??

You need to get the front wheel off the ground and see if there is any play/movement in your head bearings, if there is, you will feel/hear knocks over bumps!
