NC24 Stripdown

Howdy all,

Had a request to post up a few pictures of the '24 as I strip and rebuild her.

SO - first a little but of history. This is a registered '87 lady but has what is referenced as the 1990 colour set on the RSMotorbike paint site. She came to me in pretty good nick in 2004 and has had a good life since then. The only modification to the original spec was the addition of a linkpipe which exited on the rear left of the bike rather than the right. This pipe had a fixed can on the end which eventually fell apart and wasn't in any sort of condition that made it worth repairing.

I subsequently picked up a Coerce "Racing project" exhaust on ebay - very unusual piece, never seen anything like it. No baffles at all, no packing, the "Can" itself is actually a vented jacket surrounding the inner pipe. The inner pipe in turn has vents which line up with the airflow through the jacket - the whole system looks like it's designed to, in the least, improve scavenging - at best it could potentially generate negative pressure in the pipe, effectively sucking the exhaust gases out! Genius idea but I've yet to evaluate how well it works, and the sound out of it is harsh as all hell.

In any case, apart from that, the bike is entirely stock - and that's the way it's staying - end plan is to replace the Coerce with an original unit minus some of the packing so that it doesn't sound like a whiney sewing machine.

Done so far are:
- Plastics & tank removed
- Clocks & front subframe removed
- Front brake system removed
- Forks & triples removed
- Airbox removed
- Carbs out, stripped & cleaned
- Cooling system drained
- Radiator removed
- Rocker coveres removed & cleaned
- Valve clearances checked (one exhaust valve on cyl3 was out a smidge - elseways ok)


Right - so here's where we stood this morning:

Have the engine almost entirely cleaned in place thanks to my super high tech cleaning kit which consists of a "Muk off" bicycle gear brush, a toothbrush, and copius amounts of Aldi's finest W5 Engine Cleaning solution (seriously.. silly amounts of it).

Tomorrow sees the swingarm get a makeover.

So far, the needs doing list consists of:
- Front caliper recondition (rear caliper is perfect surprisingly enough)
- Forks need an overhaul
- Rear shock overhaul
- Various bits need cleaning & painting (subframes, sidestand, etc...)
- Plastics, tank & wheels need to go for touch up

Will update again as I have news. :peace:

Ignore RS Paints they stopped making the bike in 1988 so

Judging by the panels i'd say it's a type 8

If you want the exact year just pm me the frame number.. you can leave off the last two digits :)

It's getting there though :) Not sure if i'm keen on the left exit pipe though. I've got a decent MTC oval can and link pipe that exists on the left if your interested in it, 200x lighter than standard can :)

I've just started doing the exact opposite of what you're doing e.g attempting to build it up. The problem is that i bought my NC24 as a project that someone else stripped down :cry: . The exhaust is on the wrong side for an NC24 ?

@ Neosophist: Cheers for that link - handy to know what lies ahead on that front. How much would you be asking for the can & pipe? As mentioned, I am putting it back to original spec so will be wanting either the standard pipe or something reasonably similar. Oh, and cheers for the paint scheme tip, that's what I had thought about the production run alright - from memory, the chassis number is NC24-10040xx.

@ Cosgrove: Abolutely no problem mate - have been taking "detail" shots for cable routings etc. as I've gone along, will throw the whole lot into a folder and upload it somewhere for you when the projects done if that suits?

Incidentally - I have another '24 engine waiting in the wings and will be building a "modern bike" around it once this one is finished. ...undecided as to whether I'll build into a '24 or a '30 chassis at the moment though. Really prefer the nose of the '24 over the '30, but the '30 is a LOT easier to get trick parts for so we'll have to see what happens.

Will be in the workshop again for a wee while tomorrow and then a full day on Monday, so I'll probably throw up another update shortly after that. :peace:

Put the 24 motor in an NC30 frame, it's not hard to do at all.

I'll get you a pic of the can / link pipe and see what you think, I was thinking around £30.00 as I just need to space, it cost £160 + 30 for the pipe if i remember rightly.

sounds a little deeper but not louder, has a nice sound. I just dont' have a bike to fit it to anymore (having a major clearout of stuff!)
